Would you say onions, potato, turnip are in season at the moment? Also, carrot - is there a winter variety?

Onions, potato, turnip, carrot are not in outdoor season at the moment, they may still be in the ground as a result of last seasons growth.
Likewise broccoli and leeks.

They can be stored over winter in a dark, dry, peat or sand covered environment.

Veggies you buy in shops at present or either imported from countries that are having their growing season, or have been 'forced' by farms.

Carrots and onions don't really go "out of season" in North America anymore. But yes, root vegetables, such as what you mentioned, are definitely in season at the moment!

It depends on where you live. Most fruits and vegetables can grow all year round out in Calif and in the deep south. In the north, carrots can be left in the ground and harvested later in the spring. This all sounds like a great-tasting soup!

I take it you are talking about English seasonal vegetables. If so:

leeks
onions (to pick and hang)
cabbage (all kinds)
sprouts
turnip

Carrots are not as they rot in the ground at this time of year because its too wet, as do potatoes.

Good question because I never thought about winter veggies and summer ones. I would think that all veggies are summer veggies because if the earth is frozen during the winter months they would not grow or grow with poor quality. I thought veggies are usually shipped from warmer climates when they don't grow or do well in colder climates.......just pondering......and just my own opinion.

technically if you're growing your own in the outdoor enviroment no vegetable is really in season.

but with greenhouse this time of year.. tomatoes, peppers and onions do rather well in this enviroment.

these are the more hearty and hold their flavor more in any type of soil, even the weaker soils.

:D

I would class them as "winter veg" but purely because more people eat them at this time of year.
