The other day I saw a boy of about 6 walk up to his mom, open her shirt, undo her bra and just pull out her breast. Then he started sucking it. Is it weird for someone that old to still be doing that?

That is so gross. It is so unnecessary in most countries to nurse after the age of one. Some third world countries will nurse longer because that is the only option for nourishment for their children. I think the mother has serious issues for sticking a boob in her kids mouth. If he can use a cup, he doesn't need the boob. Maybe she should introduce him to a milkshake. That'll stop it.

I fed my grub till 22 months...that was enough. I would only do it to a maximum of 2years, that's just my personal feelings.
Each to thier own I say, but 6yo is really pushing the boundary.
I don't dis-approve the whole natural/attatchement parenting style, I have used co-sleeping etc and it worked while it was needed. But that is going to have major social/mental effects on that child if it's not culled soon.
I have heard of a child who was breastfed and home-schooled (and I'm of no opinion of home-schooling) until he was 12yo. Then he was sent to school with the general population...major culture shock for him. He couldn't understand why he couldn't make friends etc. Finally he did make a good friend and she helped him understand that what his mum had done was not normal. And at 15 he legally divorced his mother (father was long gone). This was quite a few years ago, and she is still known to get on to parenting forums and bag out her "terrible son"....
Word of advice...the full-on attatchment parenting types can be very, very closed-minded when it comes to accepting facts from other people that differ from thier own....then there also some really lovely one too.

It is perfectly normal for a 6 year old to breastfeed. My 14 year old daughter self-weaned when she was six and a half and there's nothing wrong with her in anyway: she's really bright, has robust health, is generous, kind and compassionate, is very sociable and popular with her peers (and their parents!).
There's tremendous ignorance, fear and prejudice around this issue. WHO (The World Health Organisation) recommends that ALL children - not just those in the developing world - are breastfed until AT LEAST two years old and states that food should be given in such a way as to support breastfeeding, not undermine it.
Long-term breastfeeding is far more widespread than is commonly known and it is ALWAYS child-led - though apocryphal tales abound! If allowed, children self-wean when their immune systems are sufficiently mature.

Yes it is weird, and I am a full supporter of breastfeeding! 6 Is way to old! But I think the bigger problem is the mother that is allowing this. I would think there is something "wrong" (for lack of a better word) with her. Breast milk is best... but not at 6.

Uhm. wow. That's creepy if it's true. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that it's true. And I have heard of women breastfeeding until they're 8 years old. But I'm sorry, does the woman have to do that in public? Honestly, "pulling out her breast". I think breastfeeding is awesome...but people are discreet about it...not pulling out their breast and letting the world see.

Breastfeeding is one of the best things a mother can do for her child. But breastfeeding into adulthood... I think not!
I personally feel the cut off limit should be at maximum 1 year old. 6 years old is just too old. Anytime a child can just go up to his mother and lift up her shirt is just perverse. It may not be the child, but I would be very concerned about this mother. She may be getting some type of pleasure from it, and that's pretty sick.

Yes..very...its consedered sexual abuse at that age. Most doctors will say that a child should be breastfed for only 6 months to a year. and if she has milk to be breastfeeding then that means she either has a medical problem or shes pregnant.

I have seen a 3 year old do that. I think it is strange.. but that is just because of our soceity.. In some cultures that is very normal

It's within the realm of what is biologically normal. Research by anthropologist Kathryn Detwyler shows that it is biologically normal for humans to breastfeed for 2.5 to 7 years.
I would suspect that children who are still nursing at the upper end of that range may have some sensory issues or something that makes them continue to need to nurse.
Most older nurslings only continue to nurse at naptime/bedtime.
I have known a couple of kids who nursed until they were 5 or 6 years old and they were very normal, well adjusted, independent, social, loving children.
My youngest will turn 4 next month and is still nursing.
