As soon as YOU are ready. The grieving process varies: BUT you'll never really get over it. I truly dread the day my Stimpy passes. I'm sorry for your loss. LUCK

There isn't a set time, it's just the time that's best for you and your household! Maybe your second cat is lonely now, but are you sure that if you got another cat, they'd both like each other? Maybe the second cat would feel that the new cat was replacing the other one, or just miss the old cat, and then they wouldn't like each other. But don't do something you're not ready for. Make sure you are ready, and make sure you know what you're doing before you do it. If you want a new cat, get one. But if you don't, you can wait a while. Whatever is best and most comfortable for you. Just make sure everyone will be happy with the decision. Good luck!

The sooner the better for both of you. You will never replace your cat but getting a new one will help you through the grieving period and will certainly keep your other cat happier.
The trick is to introduce them properly so there isn't any fighting. Bring in the new kitten, keep it in a room by itself for the first couple of days. The older cat will be curious and get used to its scent coming from the room. Then they will start to play footsies under the door. This is all part of their socialization. For the first couple of days bring the new kitten out, put it on the floor and let the old cat see it. Do not leave them alone the first few times and have a spray bottle with water in case the old cat decides to attack. Keep the new kitten out for short periods of time and make sure there is lots for it to play with in the room you keep it in. You can also add some of its used litter into the old cats litter and visa versa. Depending on the character of the old cat, everything should be fine in about a week.
Oh yes, one more thing. Put a touch of vanilla on the hind end of them both when you bring the new one out. That way they will both smell the same. You can also introduce a towel which the new cat has slept on to the old one. Again, this is all part of happy socialization but it takes patience to have it work 100%

I lost one of my cats a few months ago. I had two...they were brother and sister and had spent their whole lives together. When I lost the male, I was devastated and didn't even want to think about getting another one. I changed my mind quickly though when I saw how lonely my other cat was. It was apparent she missed her brother and needed some kitty company. Although I was still grieving, I adopted a new kitten (6 months old). In no time at all, my girl was back to her old self and was getting along great with the new cat. That's when I decided to get another kitten. I now have 3 females (7 years, 14 months and 10 months old). They are great company and a huge source of entertainment when they play together. They are all very happy. I still miss the cat I lost (he died suddenly of a heart attack) but I love my girls and I'm very glad I adopted them.

First of all, does she know the kitty died? Or is she still looking for it? I would make sure she isn't looking for the other cat when you get a new one.
Wait until you're both ready to get a new cat. Then get a really young one, so that it will see the older one as a mother figure and they'll be likely to bond better.
When you do get a new kitty, make sure you bathe both cats in the same soap, so they will kinda smell like each other and get along better.

Whenever you are ready is the best time. Just pay extra attention to your current cat and if her health starts to decline you might take her to the vet to make sure it is the loss of her friend and not something more serious. Also if your cat isnt ready for a new friend it might not accept a new cat or fight with it. It just depends on the cat. hopefully you and your cat can greive for the loss of your friend and then learn to live together the way it is or eventually get a new cat friend. I am sorry for your loss.

I understand your postion. It might sound a little cold but I waited two months. The first month was went he went missing and then I found out that he was hit by a car the first night he got out. He was a kitten. the second month was my period of mourning. Getting another cat I helped the healing for both my other cat, my family and myself. But nothing will ever be able to replace my lost angel.
Peace be with you.

I am sorry for your loss-but you say you are not ready for a new cat. Do you feel guilty about trying to "replace" the other one. If so, don't. Just remember you can never replace her-she will always have a special place in your heart-you are only filling the space she left.

That depends entirely on you. If you feel you want another one now, I don't see any reason why you can't have one. But............ I would check out all the rescue outfits, from pounds to humane societies. Save a life. There are thousands of cats and dogs killed each year cause of over population.
