The darker the chocolate the higher the Flavinoids (the heart healthy stuff). The best everyday snack you can have is a trail mix with 1 oz dark chocolate chips, 1oz of almonds, and 1oz of blueberries. Supposedly eating that every day helps fight off a dozen different diseases including alzheimers, cancer, heart disease and diabetes

Just like the study on wine, dark chocolate (chocolate that is high in cocoa content - such as 50% or 70%) has been studied and is supposed to be healthy when taking in moderation. That means less than half a bar a day (about 20-30g).

The chocolate that you buy at the corner store that is made from milk chocolate or white chocolate is extremly low in actual cocoa content. It is mostly milk solids and cocoa butter. These are NOT healthy for you and will affect your sugar levels, calorie intake, and cholesterol levels. All of these will adversely affect the heart.

Cheer for Chocolate!

“It’s sinful!” “It’s my biggest vice!” To hear some people talk about chocolate, you’d think it was deadly or something! There’s even a popular restaurant dessert known as - you guessed it - “Death By Chocolate!” Well enough already with the bad rap! We’ve talked before about the benefits of chocolate. But in case you STILL aren’t convinced, here are a few more reasons you should CHEER for chocolate, courtesy of Health magazine.

A happier heart. Dr. Mary Engler is an actual chocolate researcher and director of a cardiovascular program at UC San Francisco’s School of Nursing. And she says studies show that cocoa – the foundation for chocolate – increases blood flow, reduces platelet stickiness and clotting, and improves bad cholesterol. These are due to antioxidant chemicals known as “flavonoids” – which help prevent both cell damage and inflammation.
It improves your brain! Research from the Wheeling Jesuit University in Virginia suggests that chocolate boosts your memory, attention span, reaction time and problem-solving skills - by increasing blood flow to the brain.
Chocolate takes care of your skin. German researchers gave a group of women half-a-cup of flavonoid–rich cocoa every day. And after 3 months, they found that the women’s skin was moister, smoother and less scaly and red when exposed to ultraviolet light. The researchers believe that the flavonoids – which help absorb UV light – help protect and increase blood flow to the skin, improving its appearance. But remember – go for dark chocolate. It has more antioxidants and less sugar and fat than the other varieties.

Only dark chocolate because of the flavonoids and antioxidants found in dark chocolate. Look for chocolate that is 60% or more pure cacao to reap all benefits. And remember-moderation is key.

Small amounts of dark cocoa (65% and up) are considered heart healthy. Milk chocolate does not have any known benefits, except pure deliciousness and ecstacy.
