Maybe you're suffering from the stress of not having anyone but your mum whom you can trust and be confident of in friendship. Have you any sisters or brothers, cousins etc, whom you can try controlling your temper with, in a way to say, I CAN deal with this 'growing up' thing - we all appreciate how difficult it is - get in touch if you think this is going anywhere...and may God shine his light of love on you today.

bipolar is when u constantly swing between two different moods (happy and sad), that's why it's called "bipolar", "bi" meaning two.
sometimes the smallest thing can trigger it, or sometimes nothing at all, you just drastically change moods.
somebody who is bipolar, is also called "manic-depressive".
either u r completely ecstatic, u have racing thoughts, ur jumping around, ur friendly with everyone, u have a feeling of extreme happiness inside of u, so high, so manic, it makes u want to explode.
or u r completely torn, u have suicidal thoughts, u hate everyone, ur moody, ur lazy, u don't want to do anything, just die in ur sleep.
the whole point of the bipolarity is that there is no middle, it's either one extreme or the other.
and if there is a middle, it is usually pretty scary: you feel two feelings at the same time, so u end up crying and laughing at the same time.
a regular visit at the psychiatrist's office, and (if the person has nothing against taking drugs) mood stabilisers and anti-depressants can be used in the case of bipolar disorder.
this is based on personal experience, but even though the symptoms vary according to the person and his past, they are usually more or less the same.

BiPolar Disorder [slang: manic-depressive] is a state whereby one has extreme highs and extreme lows...in the extreme high the person has unparalleled energy; feels they can accomplish anything; need very little sleep; extremely talkative etc. ...in the extreme low phase the person is deeply depressed, uncommunicative and can be somewhat hallucinatory or paranoid. Bi Polar Disorder [two polars of behavior] can be regulated with prescribed meds fairly effectively.
Schizophrenia is fast becoming a 'tag' for a variety of mental health symptoms but those systems often manifest in an inability to grasp total reality and people may experience hallucinations; hear voices or be paranoid.
One of the respondents here gave a great source - the DSM IV...also speak to a physician who is much better equipped to make a diagnosis than your mom....
Whatever the issue is, it can be treated and should be for you to carry on with a fruitful life.
Best of outcome to you!

Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are basically two different terms for the same set of symptoms. But they do represent a difference in attitude in some professionals. Those who use the more modern term "bipolar" are more likely to work with prescription drugs and counseling combined. The term "schizophrenia" hearkens back to when they didn't do much besides put you in a locked ward and fill you up with Thorazine.
They are saying, my dear, that they feel you have but a gentle grip on reality, and there seems to be a great deal wrong with you in some important way. But I wouldn't worry about it: the incidence of misdiagnosis and exaggerated diagnosis in such a situation is incredible. Depending on who you ask, I'd make it about half.
Ask the person who seems to have the most intelligence and willingness to actually talk to you about all this what they think of it. What, exactly, have you been doing that caused such an extreme diagnosis to be laid on you? Have you been testing the limits, the way teen-agers tend to? Then I think we can safely say you have found them.
This is what you call serious, my dear. If you are feeling freaked out, try to find someone you can talk to, and forget what letters they have after their name. Then report back with such person to your parents on what you feel is going wrong and how you think it could be put right.
Good luck and God bless.

Any mental health diagnosis is made by a qualified medical doctor. A GP could possibly suspect a diagnosis (e.g. depression) and provide medication to treat what they think is the diagnosis, but generally speaking a psychiatrist will make any overall, formal diagnosis. Even your GP should refer you to psychiatrist for depression really. All diagnoses are made based on criteria from a book called the DSM-IV TR (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition). The criteria for making any diagnosis is very extensive, and a full medical history has to be taken before any 'official' diagnosis would be made. A good website for information on any mental health condition is www.mind.org.uk
To be honest though, if you are unclear of any medical condition that you think you have or might have I would suggest you speak to your GP in confidence first.

I would think that your mom is exaggerating. Realistically if she honestly thought that you were schizophrenic or bipolar she would have and should have sought help for you by now. However just in case...
Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder where one basically loses touch with reality. They have delusions, hallucinations, confused thoughts and speech.
They can have bizarre thoughts and behavior (such as someone is out to get them or control their mind.)
Bipolar is like a cycle of depression and manic moods and behaviors. One can also have delusions and hallucinations if bipolar.
If you are worried that you could possibly have one of these problems talk to someone that you can trust. Talk to your Dr, get help.

you need to be seen by a professional who can diagnose your condition, and get you started on the right mix of meds. Both conditions can be treated, but it's important to know what you're dealing with. My son is bipolar, but we thought he may also be schizophrenic - we had a neuro-psych evaluation done to determine his condition. Both disorders can be dealt with, but you have to know exactly what you're battling. Good luck, and know that you're not alone.
