Neutering an animal has health benefits and improves their quality of living when they reach old age.
Declawing has no benefit to the animal and some studies sugguest that it can lead to behavioural problems.
For example. How would you stop your nails from growing? Why.... Cut them out from the nail bed! Cut off that whole top joint. No more finer nails. Get it? That isn't a very nice thing to do to an animal.

Neutering? Definitely. If you neuter your dog, you do four things: 1) Ensure that your dog doesn't contribute to the pet overpopulation, 2) Ensure that your dog doesn't get uncomfortable every time a female in heat comes within a mile of him, 3) Eliminate the possibility of testicular cancer, and 4) Calm down a male dog and ease his urge to "mark" his territory... usually.
Declaw? If you mean removing of the dew claws (those claws on the back of the paws that have no real use), this is often done in young puppies but only in adults where the dew claws are large or loose enough that they could easily become tangled in something and ripped off violently. If you mean removing all the claws, that simply is NOT done on dogs. Find out what your son meant about "declawing" the dog. If he meant a real "declawing", save the money you would have spent on the declawing and use it to pay for his first session with a therapist to discuss his issues. :) (kidding)
Good luck with your JRT!

Neutering a dog makes it a better pet. especially if it is neutered before a year old. Declawing a dog is cruel. It is different in cats because their feet are different and it isn't as painful. But with dogs it is extremely painful and so not worth it. If you want to declaw him because of something he is doing, digging, clawing, fighting, that sounds like a behavior problem and can be fixed with training. Some training can take 3 or 4 months to show any difference and it takes a lot of patience and commitment. Good luck!!

Now by declawed I am assuming you mean having the dewclaw removed which is done in some breeds. This proceedure should be done at the same time as tail docking because it is an amputation and should be done early on when there is less lasting trauma, emotional and physical.
As for neutering, of course you should get the pup neutered/spayed. Unless you are showing which is done to determine good breeding stock for the betterment of a particular breed. Even then usually once a dog has reached its potential and been bred and contributed what it will to the gene pool is often neutered or for their female counterparts spayed. It can increase longevity and decrease some potential health problems to neuter or spay and of course helps keep the displaced pet population down as well.

For any dog, unless you are planning to breed him then neuter him. There are so many pluses that come with this! Less agression, less marking, etc etc.
By declawing I am guessing that you are meaning the dew claws. Dew claws SHOULD be removed by 5 DAYS old. If you are going to show him, dew claws may or may not be required to be removed. The only reason that you should need to, or want to, remove dew claws at any age older than 5 days, is if the dew claws are really loose and floppy, or seem to get caught and rip off. Remember that if you do not get the dew claws removed, they are still nails and WILL need to be trimmed or else you risk causeing your dog to have ingrown nails.
Good luck with your jack russell!

You are talking about a dog, right??? They do not declaw dogs. They sometimes remove the dewclaws....but the do not DECLAW dogs!!
IT is NOT called "dew clawing". The "dew claw" is removed shortly after birth in breeds that have tails docked, and some other breeds. The dewclaw...unless it is flopping there, can be left alone. There is NO need to remove it now. If you htink there is, talk to your vet about it. They would know.
PS....the "dew claw" is the THUMB-like claw that is on the idside of the front feet.

Some dogs have the dewclaws remove while being neutered. It is a good idea to have it done at the same time. Many are done by the breeders just after whelping. Dogs don't get declawed that's for cats.

A JRT declawed??? You mean Jack Russel Terrier? God I hope not! You don't declaw dogs. I sure hope you are talking about a cat. Neutering is a wonderful idea though.

Neutering is a great thing, but declawing dogs is cruel and inhumane. Even doing so to cats is inhumane as well. Why did you get an animal with claws in the first place if you can't deal with them?

nueter yes. Declaw, you can't declaw a dog. If he is scratching, then have a groomer show you how to clip and file his nails every 4-6 weeks. It will help loads. Also, they do make little covers for dog claws (like Soft Caps for cats). I never tried them, but it might help. Maybe training the dog not to jump or "box" with the feet would work too.

Neutering is great but I've never even HEARD of declawing a dog unless of coarse you mean the dewclaws. Those should be removed 7 days after birth but otherwise it's a surgical procedure. If that's what your talking about, then get it done. Otherwise don't!!
