In the past, the idea of getting a gold watch upon retirement from a life-long job at a company was considered an honour to thank the person for giving their "time"--their life to the company.
At my job, they've put a twist on it in 2 ways: if you work here for 25 years, they give you a nice watch, but it's one worth about $250. If you retire, they give you a mantle clock -- which I think looks bad but it's their tradition based upon the old "golden watch."

please be more specific. who is it from?
if it's from a significant other and it's engraved with ' until the end of time' then that's a no brainer.
if you are retiring after 25-30 years with a company, then it's a thank you for your services ... although... do they still do that?
if it's from your parents it could mean 'stop being so gosh darn late to everything!'
if it's from a relative, i don't think that it means anything.
if it's from a friend and it's inexpensive according to that person's income, then it means nothing
if it's from a friend and it's expensive according to that person's income, then it means that they are willing to give you more of their money meaning the are willing to give more of themselves to you meaning that they like you - like you ... in THAT way.... like you.

If its from a GF it can be significant. It is usually a costly item though not extremely personal, it can relay how much a person is "investing" in you. Usually subconsciously anyway.

If you give a watch to a woman you are telling her you like her but can't committ. Jewlery means committment and a watch is not jewlery.

IT's not something cheap for sure.
Maybe your are tardy and a watch is to remind you to keep time better.

if its an expensive watch

I love watches. At least you won't have to ask for the time.

if work gave you this : thanks for the time spend with their company!
if a family member gave it to you : they think you are always late...and want you to be punctual.
from a women to a women ..beware she is a lesbian.
from a man to a man : gay
women to men : sexy
men to women : cannot commit .. (UNLESS you already have the ring, necklace , earrings and bracelet)
