Vermont has the reputation, but is not the biggest producer. That record has to go to New York State. Canada is a large producer, as well as Pennsylvania.
Pure syrup properly evaporated from maple sap is the same regardless of where the sugar bush ( stand of maple trees) was located. Quality depends on the RUN ( early or late ), sanitation, and skilled operation of the evaporator.
In pure syrup, nothing is added. It's what came out of the tree except that the water was steamed out. The highest yield was from a tree called Sweet Sue, two percent sugar in it's sap.
So, the best does not come from any certain State. The producer is the one to look for.

Vermont & New Hampshire are famous, but they also produce really great maple syrup in Quebec, Canada.
