Here's a huge selling point to the Army National Guard, depending on what state you join in, the is a tuition assistance program for college. If you join the Army National Guard, they will pay tuition for any state sponsored college in that state. Also, when it comes to deployments, you mobilize with the unit you train with as opposed to the Reserves where you can be pulled out and sent as an individual.
Another great thing about the Guard is that you can mobilize to help in state emergencies like snow, flood, tornado, and hurricane relief.
I wouldn't go any other way!

I've never served in the army national guard but as a Marine I got to work with them. My observations were as follows. On the plus side they were generally more motivated then their active duty counterparts and more willing to learn. I think this had to do with the fact that they did not do this stuff day after day so it was still new and fun. On the negative side they generally were not as proficient as they should be, again because they don't do it day after day some things that should be instinctual just weren't. If you are going for college funding then they are definately the way to go and as long as your national guard unit isn't a fighting unit or your mos is going to keep you from being shot at then whatever limitations you may have on training won't be much of an issue. If you want to be a shooter then spend some time active to develop the skills and the habits that only the daily grind can give you before you "Go Guard."
As far as your parents go. Well, my parents were very supportive of my decision so I don't know what your parents arguments are. I will tell you the same thing that my father told me. There will come a point when you have to stop being the child and become the adult. Your parents love you and they want what is best for you but you will always be their baby and they get afraid. Listen to what they have to say, do some investigation on your own, consider everything that you have learned and choose your course.

It really sounds like the decision is completely yours. You're not going to be able to finish school quickly. What you can do is join an ROTC Program and Contract. You will get a small paycheck monthly, while doing military training, then directly after you graduate you will go into the Active Duty as an Officer, if that's what you want. Don't worry about the National Guard. Contact your school's Military Science Department. Edit: If you go ROTC and become an Officer, it really doesn't matter if you start now or start when you graduate. Plus, when you join ROTC, you will basically be in the Guard anyway. There is a program called SMP, Simultaneousness Membership Program. You can be in the Guard or Reserve and drill with them on the weekends while in ROTC. You should look into that. Again, contact your Military Science Dept. If you go Guard and deploy, you're going to be too old to be an officer. You're looking at 2yrs of you life gone for a deployment. You'll be on Title 32 (state) Orders for about 6months. Then Title 10 Orders (Federal) for another 3months while training then you'll be in country for about 9 months.

Speaking from a parent's point of view, no to the guard but yes to active duty. My son joined the Army to become independent of his parents (we were paying his college tuition and rent), he saw how hard his mother struggled to ensure his rent was paid and decided to stop depending on her for living expenses. My reasoning for discouraging the Guard is that as the active folks are returning from deployment in Iraq or Afganistan, the Reserves and Guard units are being deployed to replace them much quicker than other active duty units. Whatever your decision, do not close the communication with your family. Good luck!

YES, It's a very good idea to join the US Army National
Guard. See a US Army Recruiter and they will have all of the up to date information to read and study before you make a decision.

Yes, we need good men like you to protect this country. I'll be a Marine, once my time is up. I'll most likely be in the Reserves or in the National Guards.

Don't go if you have a lot of doubts about it. I just finished 4 years in the Navy and am still reserve but am already thinking about going back in. I Loved it but sometimes it really sucked.

Only you can decide that...and if you have that many doubts, better not sign a contract.
