A friend of mine is expecting her daughter to get a full-time job after graduation in summer of 2007. She is a 58-year old widow and doesn’t have health insurance. She is planning to have her daughter claim her as a dependent in the coming tax year in order to cover her in her daughter company’s health insurance once her daughter gets the job.

I told her the above condition is impossible. Her daughter can claim her as a dependent, but not able to cover her in the group health insurance, such as company's health insurance.

Would like to hear other comments and opinions.

For the mother esp at that age it is best if she can get her own and not tied to the daughters employer, main reason is if daughter leaves and joins another company, the mother may not be able to join the company scheme due to e.g. age (some companies imposed a max entry age) and health (does not cover pre-existing illness). Anyway group insurers don't usually allow cover for parents, only spouse and children. Even if they do the benefits may not be as good as compared to the revised shield plans.

The daughter though can pay for mother's health insurance using her medisave if they opt for the 'shield' plans out on the market.

For sure, get health insurance for the mother asap. An accident fall could lead to a hospital bill of $30,000 even at SGH - this happened to one of my colleagues.

If they need help choosing a good plan for mother just contact me. I'm an independent.

Unless it is some super funky policy she will not be allowed to cover her mother on her insurance policy. Health insurance usually only covers spouse and dependent minor children. A lot of policies won't even cover domestic partners so I would be surprised if mom could get coverage.

An adult child can NOT cover a parent under their health insurance. I also don't think a child can cover a parent as a dependent for tax purposes, but you'd have to check with an accountant on that one.

Most likely, but usually costs extra.

I would contact the companie's HR director and get the answer directly from them. Nearly all health plans can be extended to cover spouses, children, and extended family if need-be.

I tried my best to look through my company's insurance policies - the only thing I could find was adding a spouse and children.. not even a field for "other".

It depends on the company's health plan, usually they only let you claim spouse and kids. But she can talk to the company's HR to find out for sure.

It actually depends on the company's benefits.
Generally she can claim her as a dependent if she is living with her & caring for her; some companies will allow you to claim certain things for this type of dependent. She should talk to her HR person about the benefit package when she gets the job.

I honestly doubt it- only a spouse and minor children can be covered (also children over 18 that are attending school full time. The best bet would be to ask H.R. dept, but I am 99% sure that the answer is no.
