When you pop a bag of popcorn in the microwave, all of the kernels don't pop at the same time (obviously). So why don't the first kernels that pop get burned since they've cooked the longest?

actually if the popcorn does "burn" it is the first ones that popped that do burn. When the corn pops is determined by the moisture contained within. Since most of the corn in the bag would have been harvested and packaged together they should all contain about the same amount of moisture. This should allow all of the corn to pop before any gets to the "burn" stage.

Food doesn't "burn" in a microwave. The water in the kernel expanded and did its job. Once the water is gone, there's nothing left to cook. Plus, only 2 minutes in a microwave isn't enough time to do any serious damage.
