Well what you could do is ask if people have a problem with any of your animals before they come over so you can appropriately handle things before they show up. Like for instance if some one is afraid of birds you might move your birds into a bedroom or somewhere were the person who is afraid of them wont be in contact with them. But most people (who dont have fears of whatever animals you have) shouldnt mind. They should understand that houses are lived in and things arent always perfect. I know I would rather go into a home that may need some cleaning and have a bunch of animals, than go to a home that is so clean I feel like I am in a museum and cant touch anything! But thats just me. My house is never clean like it should be but the people that come over are okay with that and honestly most of them come over to see my 2 dogs and 2 cats and my fish. Well dont feel bad about your house. Just try to accomidate the guests as best as you can and thats all you can do.

I'm old fashioned and think that with guests "minimum" mess is appaling. There should be no mess.
We have two dogs and one cat at the moment but in the past had more. At one point, three dogs, three cats, a rat, two rabbits, and some anoles, some of which belonged to a displaced family member.
If we were having guests, the cats were fine. And the less active of the dogs would be allowed in the house. Those who were too wild around guests would go outside. All toys would be picked up and put away and any other pet supplies that weren't food and water would go in their proper place.
I guess the idea is the same in that you don't want people to see all your personal grooming products. It isn't ok to have your lipstick on your coffee table, so doggie toys and a brush don't really belong there either.

I'm not worried about having people over. As long as the house is clean and the pets are well cared for it shouldn't be a problem. I have to be careful letting my birds out when there is company thoug as they like to hop onto peoples heads and some people aren't very understanding. They don;t appreciate having a bird making a nest of their hair lol. If you know that someone specifically dislikes your kind of pet though it may be a good idea just to keep the animals out of the room where you're entertaining while the company is over.

To weary less about your pets make sure some basics plans are in place. Smoke detectors. On all levels of your home. Electronic detectors tied into the fire department is ideal. There are also medical alert systems that will alert the fire department too. Inform neighbors about all your pets. Disconnect, shut off, turn down, unplug, adjust, as many electrical appliances as you can when you leave the house. Don't leave anything charging while you are away. (Especially laptop computers) I weary about my pets when I am away. When I leave my home I do the shut / turn off routine. I never leave my laptop charging because it nearly started a fire once when the battery over heated. Luckily I was home when it happened. I make sure to turn down the heat or the AC up. And never leave heaters going. My neighbors all know that I have pets. If there's a fire, I am sure they will be here letting the fire dept. know. And , not to be insensitive, but by the time your front door was to burn down, your pets will probably be dead already. Smoke kills before the actual fire does. If the problem is making you crazy, speak with a therapist. Maybe, as your animals pass away, you might not want to replace them until you get to the number of animals your feel comfortable leaving.

Don't worry about what other people think, as long as the pets in your house make you happy then don't worry about it. I don't let other people get to me. I fell if they don't like it then they shouldn't come to my house. I know exactly what your talking about I have 3 dogs, 1 cat, 3 turtles, a fish tank with 6 fish, and a squirrel. By the way I rescued the squirrel, she's still a baby this spring I'm turning her loose. Just in case you wanted to know why I had a squirrel in my house.

Do you like your pets? Do you like having guests? Which do you like more?
Seriously, though, I just lived with a pair of roommates who had four cats, a dog, and a snake (and whosever dog they were puppysitting that week as well). They always had people over. Kids loved it, because kids always love animals, and a lot of the people they had over would bring their own (usually dogs).
As for your family, invite them over, be gracious hosts, and encourage them to do the same. You're being the better person by being warm and hospitable. They don't have to live with the animals, and if they can't stand being around them, then the onus is upon them to offer a solution that makes them more comfortable.
Don't feel guilty, though. As long as your pets are well taken care of, which it sounds like they are, they are part of your family and your lifestyle choice. It's up to your family to get over themselves and appreciate you for the big-hearted types that you are.

I have 2 dogs, 2 cats and fish. Granted, the dogs are outside dogs, but if you keep your house clean, why not have people over! Pets are like family to me, and it sounds like you to. Why be embarrassed, you have helped save some animals lives, be proud.

I think having a multi-pet household is a wonderful thing as long as you can keep up with it. I would have one myself if I didn't have a limit on the ammount of animals where I live. It shouldn't matter what others think about your number of animals, just as long as you love each and every one of them.
