At one year old the extra fat will not hurt the baby. They use the fat and cholesterol to build their brains- as well as alot of other nutrients of coarse. If you feel later that you baby is gaining too much weight, then swithch him or her over to 2% and/or some soy milk to also give him or her the benefits of soy protein. Unless you just really go overboard, they will use everything you give them to grow. The problem comes in when there is a family history of diabetes and the baby is considerably overweight.

There is very little difference between whole milk and 2%. They both contain bad fat and are basically all sugar. Babies do not need milk once weaned from breast or bottle. The same nutrients can be found in whole foods.
Regardless of that, 1% milk has all the same nutrients as whole milk..just less fat.

Start out with whole milk. At this age they need the fat for their brain development. I think after 2 they can switch to low fat, definitely by age 5.

Whole milk - that is what the doctor always told me. The baby needs that extra fat.

Your pediatrician can make this determination with you, but most children start on whole milk and then change to the lower percentage.
