Without fail, a wedding reception must play:
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper
Thriller - Michael Jackson
SHOUT - The Dynatones
(quick side note: the easiest way to kill great dancing at a wedding is to play "group dances", ie The Electric Slide, We Are Family)
For ceremony music, I recommend
Prelude – Air on a G String (Bach)
Processional – Canon in D
Recessional – The Wedding March (Mendelssohn)
Good luck in your selections!

When picking songs for my wedding, I went to amazon.com and did a search for wedding songs. It comes up with several different CDs, and if you click on some of them, it gives you a snip-it you can listen to. There are tons of beautiful music for weddings. One of the ones I used was Pachelbel Canon in D. Congrats on your upcoming wedding!

Try songs that tell how u & yours feel about each other. Yrs ago I sang to my fiance, You Light Up My Life, Hopelessly Devoted, and a few others were sang & played, but that was in the beginning of the 80's, 1982 to be exact!! So, u 2 get your heads together, listen to some music together, and if any of them end up "turning u 2 on", go for it!!!!

Go to google.com and search for "popular wedding songs". It will bring up pages that are dedicated to wedding music (for the ceremony and the reception). This was a total life saver for me when it came to choosing the music for my own wedding.

I am shocked that Susie the wedding co-ordinator recommends Mendelssohn's Wedding March! All the church organists and choirmasters I know practically vomit when they have to play that. They call it (and the Lohengrin "Bridal March") as well as the worn out hymns chosen by many couples "the usual crap". Sorry, but I'm quoting direct.
Anyway, for a ceremony I agree with Susie's recommendations other than the hated Wedding March and I also like:-
For the processional i.e. when you walk in:
Handel Water Music
Bach Prelude No 1 in D Major
Handel Arrival of the Queen of Sheba
For the signing of the register
If a church wedding (I am a semi-professional singer and get paid to sing at this point)
Bach/Gounod "Ave Maria"
Franck "Panis Angelicus"
Handel "O That I on wings could rise"
Handel "Zadok the Priest" sung by a good choir
or the following, whether a civil or church ceremony
"Caro nome" from Verdi's opera "Rigoletto" but you need a GOOD soprano to sing it (it is beyond my capabilities I'm afraid) It's sung by Gilda, Rigoletto's 17 year daughter, who's in love for the first time. The words mean "Dearest name of he that first made my heart beat with lurve . . . you shall live in my memory forever . . . even till the day I die, my thoughts will fly to you."
"Silent Worship" or "Did you not hear my lady" from "Ptolemy"
For the recessional (When you and your husband leave the church or hall)
Handel "Rejouissance" from the Royal Fireworks Music
Elgar "Pomp and Circumstance March No 5"
Widor "Toccata"
Charpentier "Prelude to Te Deum" - this can also be used when you walk in.
If you're looking for something "pop" then I'd pick "The Closest Thing to Crazy" by Katie Melua.
