I used to be a Christian. That bothered me too. I'd slip my shoes off quietly during the sermon, but if my mom saw she'd tell me to put them back on.

God told Moses through the Burning Bush that Mount Siani was holy ground. This did not extend to every synagogue everywhere else.

Likewise, nowhere in the New Testament does it say one must remove their shoes to worship. In fact, the New Testament is fairly silent on the issue of shoes. God gave us a lot of freedom in how we may choose to worship.

In some places, Christians follow local custom in removing their shoes before entering a church, just as they would when entering someone's house. In other parts of the world, there is no custom in this regard.

I was surprised when I discovered that Muslims and Hindu take their shoes off. At first I thought it was just because they wanted to keep the floors clean like I do at home. Never occurred to me that someone would think it odd that we didn't take ours off. Some of us do other things to show veneration such as bowing at the alter of repose or when the cross is carried into and out of the service and kneeing at different times (only liturgical churches do these things. The Protestants don't)

Christians claim that they talk to God in many places, not just church. They would have to go barefooted all the time.
