Top 5 free sites for internet genealogy:
1. http://www.familysearch.org - access to hundreds of millions of records from all over the world, collected by the Mormons. Also lots of research tips. More data here than at the next 10 largest sites.
2. http://www.usgenweb.com - A volunteer effort which has web sites for every county in the US. Lots of info if you know where your ancestors were. There's also a Canadian Genweb and a Worldgenweb.
3. http://www.rootsweb.com - A huge collection of user submitted data, thousands of mailing lists for specific surnames and locations, and lots more.
4. http://www.cyndislist.com - This is THE directory where you can find all the other sites. It's a searchable list of thousands of genealogy sites worldwide.
5. http://www.ancestry.com has lots of US info and some on western Europe, but while a little bit of info is free, it is mostly a very expensive pay site. BUT, many public libraries and all the Mormon Family History Centers have subscriptions to Ancestry, so you can access it for free at the library or FHC, though not from home.

If you live in the USA and are willing to spend an hour and a half, you could do me a HUGE favor and learn about your family tree at the same time.

Get a list of your grandparents, their birth, marriage & death dates and places, maiden names for the grandmothers. If you can do it for your great grandparents, even better. If you don't have all the dates and places for all the people, that is OK.

Then go to

http://www.tedpack.org/genclass1.html

Work through the exercises. They all ask you to look up someone from your list on the free data bases. Where it says to do it for one or two people, do it for all of them. I'd like to know if you find it clear, helpful and well-laid out.

It is for a class I'm going to do at our library on Internet genealogy for beginners.

I'd appreciate feedback; what worked, what didn't, what was clear, what wasn't, what caused you problems. You will probably find some clues to your family tree and you will certainly get an introduction to some of the largest free genealogy sites on the Internet.

Thanks!

I started with Cyndi's List because it was so easy. (see your other answer for website). Then I branched into using more parts of Rootsweb and posted inquiries. Then I also started using familysearch (the Mormon site). I have been contacted by a number of relatives I never even knew I had and ended up visiting Nova Scotia to meet some of them- all because I posted inquiries on Rootsweb. Good luck,

Visit Rootsweb.com or Cyndislist.com

Cyndi's list has categorized THOUSANDS of genealogy websites. It's a little hard to navigate through all the links, but once you figure it out, you'll stumble upon a wealth of information.

Try the census results from the public records office - you can view results from 1841 to 1901 for the UK on:
