About 12 years ago i went on a school trip to Switzerland, 1 day we went on a trip by train to Italy. we went to a place that had a lake and we got a boat out to a small island with what i think is a palace on it. the interior of the building was all decorated in shells. the gardens were also amazing. I know it is in the north of Italy, I would love to go back but haven't a clue what the name of it is?

I think you are referring to Lago Maggiore. This lake has a beautiful little island called Stresa. Look it up on this link:

You've been on the Lago Maggiore and the Island must be the Isola Bella (one of the Borromeanian Islands)
As far as I can remember (I've been there once a 30 years ago)
yr descriptions matches with the Palazzo Borromeo in the Isola Bella.

Here are the links for yr checking
For Lago Maggiore

For the Isola Bella
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isola_Bella_%28Lago_Maggiore%29

For Isola dei Pescatori and others

Also a site in Italian with a few pics of Palazzo Borromeo

Stresa is a village on the border of the Lake and itsn't an island.

I wish it helps
