My friend told me that she dipped the baby's pacifier in whisky because she read that it was ok (somewhere online). The baby is 11 months old. I totally disagree with this method, but is it really ok?

IS YOUR FRIEND OUT OF HER MIND???

Thirty years ago, this was acceptable. Now, it's called Child Endangerment. Not to mention, just damn stupid. Babies are NOT equipped to consume alcohol and could DIE from alcohol poisoning from even a few drops.

No way alcohol and especially extremely strong alcohol is never okay for a baby. There little bodies are growing and this can cause serious damage to there organs not to mention the fact it is absolutely immoral. Even a little whiskey is nowhere advisable ...that is like giving a baby Benadryl to calm them down.!These self made remedies to make a baby easier to deal with need to stop! If people are going to have a baby know what comes along with them and the fact that your just going to have some patience and deal with them.

Make sure you give her something for a fever, it will also help some with swelling. Get a baby tooth brush and massage the gums where the teeth are coming in. Try dipping the brush in warm water to soothe the pain. You could also put a dab od baby orajel on the brush. Definatly give the Teething tablets. I give my sone a few more because he is a bit bigger than most babies and it usually helps. NEVER give wiskey that was DUMB they are babies and that has alcohol in it which can get you arrested! well, try WARM water, some babies dont like cold.... like mine. Try these things. The brush thing will cause the teeth to break through QIUKCLY! Good Luck! :-)

NO, NO, NO!!!! I think that people did stuff like that hundreds of years ago before they knew any better. It is never okay to give a baby any alcohol. A method that worked for me was to dip the pacifier in sugar to get my baby calmed down. Not great to use all the time, but great in a desperate situation and much better than hitting the bottle!!!

Although it is practiced in some families homes to give a child alcohol to calm them down... it can hurt them in the long run. You have the right idea by not agreeing with this method.
You also would put yourself at risk to get a child protective case against you if you get caught.
Overall, the most important thing is that it can negatively affect your child's development.

I don't agree with it, however, if the child is teething, it is an ok last resort kind of thing. I would never do that to my child. Also the teething tablets have bella dona in it, a sedative that is very much illegal (I have tried to get the plant) and I had my anatomy teacher (also a Dr. look at it) and he said he would rather dip his finger in whiskey and rub it on their gums than give those teething tablets.

No. I've been told this a lot also so I spoke with my doctor. Just a little bit of alcohol in such a small body can do serious damage. It is also considered illegal because you are providing alcohol to a minor. I wouldn't try that any time soon--hopefully you'll find information to convince her otherwise. Best of Luck!

yes back in parents and grandparents days there wasn't much parents could do to calm fussy babies, callic and such, so they would use rum brandy, rum, whiskey etc. on the gums or dip a pacifier to help calm them. alot of people have done this for ages but it wasn't a big amount or they did it to dangerous levels, it was the only way they knew to help their babies and it worked!!

NO!!! that is grandma's way of doing things but it isn't legal. tell her what she is doing could get her child taken away! OMG I can't believe people still do this. If you or she needs to calm your child try gripe water. It is a natural remedy and contains no alcohol. here is a link that can help you find it in your area or you can purchase it online.

Orajel teething drops for babies.... does not have bella donna in it!!
Teething gels are a safe way to help with teething pain.

Also try liquid tylenol for babies to help with the pain and fussiness of teething.

Also, ice ring teethers help numb the pain too.

Giving a child under 21 years of age alcohol is illegal and dangerous, not to mention irresponsible when there are SOOO many safe alternatives these days!!!!!!!
