I really want this dog and have the green light from my wife to get one. The only thing I'm worried about is how much it will shed in the house. If I make sure to brush him at least every other day or so is this something that's manageable? ANY info that you can give about the extent that the GSD sheds and how to manage it is greatly appreciated.

They do shed, I own them and there are several things you can do....

1. Feed high quality dog food....like canidea...it is a little more expensive, but the dogs will eat half as much, and they get better nutritian from them.....this will mean less shedding.

2. Daily brushing with a brush made to get the under coat....every other day will help, but it is not as good as everyday....

3. Just be preparred for it.....no matter what you do..they will shed, especially in the spring.....its just part of having the breed....

I do recommend them though...they are good dogs, very playful and easy to train....they do need lots of exercise so a good sized yard and lots of play time.....

My grandparents always had German Shepherds. YES they shed like crazy. And they even brushed them a lot to try and keep it under control. But nope. Hair everywhere. The dogs always lived in the house (I think all dogs should because they are social pack animals) but they LOVED it outside. They need a lot of exercise. At least an hour outside every day (supervised, so playing or walking, not just on thier own because they don't really do much if you aren't facilitating it). Otherwise they would chew things and act out. As for good family pets, their dogs were always great with everyone.

I have a long hair German Sheperd, and yes he sheds alot!
I actually have 3 kinds of brushes (a pin/bristle, a slicker and a rake brush.. I think that's what they are called), make sure you do it outdoors or the hair will fly around the house! I also use the vacuum with the round brush, he stays still and loves it.

I recommend you brush him BEFORE you give him a bath, it seems that when i don't brush him before a bath he sheds double the amount of hair! I would also take him to the grooming once a month. Good luck! And on another note they are very smart dogs.

Do German Shepherds Shed

Well I have a German Shepard and she sheds a lot but I am not as dilligent about brushing her as I should be. I use a brush that we got at Walmart to brush her with. It looks like a curry comb for horses. But it is called a shedding blade I think. It works great but you need to do it outside and on a day that isnt windy or your neighbors are gonna be mad. When I'm done brushing her it looks like it snow in the back yard with all the hair. but like I said it probably wont be that bad if you brush him regularly. I have to vaccuum my house about once a week and that usually picks up a couple of canisters of hair (I have the bagless kind) but that is with two dogs (the other is a golden retriever) and 2 cats living inside. Hopefully this will help. And just FYI Dakota (my shepard) is the best of my animals to give baths to. She doesnt like them but she just stands there and doesnt fight me unless I get water on her ears and then she tries to shake. good luck.

You should be fine but there will always be a time, no matter if he is brushed every day.. he will "blow his coat". Black & reds or tans seem to shed all at once while, I have found, sables from czech, if kept inside will shed more than the others.

Hope This Helps and I invite you to join my 360 blog which is all about training German Shepherds in the Sport of Schutzhund which is Tracking, Obedience & Agility & Protection.

GOOD LUCK

as long as you are deligent and keep him brushed you should be fine. get a brush that is designed to keep the undercoat thin and brushed and keep him bathed usually once a month is plenty. too much and his coat can dry out. find out all you can about this breed so you won't have other issues besides the shedding. they are wonderful dogs but very intelligent and require lots of attention and training. they must have some sort of job or activity to do or they can become destructive. good luck to you, and great choice on dog!

I have a german shepherd, he is 10 years old now. We brush him daily and it does not always help. He sheds a lot certain times of the year. Get the dog anyway. It is so worth it.

They do shed alot, especially in the spring, but with DAILY brushing (not just every other day) you will be able to keep this under control. Plus it's grea for their coat if it's brushed everyday.

they shed a lot! you will have to brush it at least once a day. It only gets bad when the weather starts to get warmer. if you are planning on keeping it in the house then it should not shed as bad cause it wont have to adjust to the changing weather as much. just beware, they demand a lot of attention and if they dont get it in the house they can get desructive, but otherwise they are really great dogs
