I'm almost 20 and I work full-time and am considering enlisting. I heard you can defer basic training for up to one year through DEP, but I thought that was just for like seniors in high school. Can I still have mine delayed for a whole year (for personal reasons) or will they only give it to me for a really good reason, like I was in college or something?

I was on the delayed entry program after I graduated HS because there was not an available Basic class for me to get into. I enlisted in August, and did not leave for training until January.

My hubby was 20 and not in school and did the delayed entry.

I think he signed in May (*before we met) and went to basic in September.

That was in '96, so not sure if they still do that. Check with a recruiter.

Nope everything can be done on a case by case basis. The question is can the recruiter afford too. If he or she needs to make quota they may not be so willing if you are not in school but most are flexible and willing just be honest with them on why you need the time.
