the odie in the movie was a jack russel terrier of the wire haired variety. there are very energectic dogs. if you are wanting one i reccomend you talk to the breed club for jrt in your area and research the breed at length and find a reputable breeder.

Wire haired dachsaund (spelling?). I know several and they seem like nice dogs, but each is very different from the other. And not as easy to train as Garfield and Odie made it seem! Please go to the AKC website to get more breed info and find a contact for a local breed club. Just cause it is cute on screen doesn't mean it is going to be good in YOUR house. And keep in mind that they use smart, outgoing dogs for tv and movies-that makes them great for work, but can be bad for your furniture if you let them get bored:)

I think he is a dachshund (not sure), if you get a dachshund there are great pets, I have two male and female, the best dogs I have ever had, love them very much, but i do know they are very hard to house train, they need lots of love also, I have had my male for 2 years now and he does pretty well about going out, but still not 100 % housebroken.

a TERRIER i think-research your breed carefully before getting a dog-Buying a puppy just because they were cute in a movie is a bad idea! Ask any humane society how many dalmations needed to be destroyed after those disney movies

The dog that plays Odie isn't a purebred. He's just a mutt. Your best bet of getting one that looks like him would be in your local animal shelter.

I'll bet you money he's a mutt. Cartoon dogs like that that didn't have a specific breed in the cartoon are usually played by mutts in the live action versions.
