Okay, I was in NY for X-mas, and the temp didn't go below 50 degress! This is unheard of. Should our leaders be doing more to change our ways to protect the planet? This is the strangest year when it comes to the weather. NY where my family is usually has alot of snow this time of year.

Actually the warm weather we are now having is caused by el Nino. Tthe temperature of the earth has increased less than 7/10 of 1 degree (C) from 1880 to 2005. That is an increase of about 1 degree (F) in 125 years. You may choose to believe that is global warming or you may not. Here is a link taking you to a NASA chart showing that temperature chart. http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/2005/2005cal_fig1.gif There are numerous charts all over the internet showing the same. Some say that 1 degree is enough to impact the global climate, others say it's not. Most proponents of global warming think the earth's temerature has risen much more than that and don't even know that it has only risen by 1 degree. But the charts do not lie as do the proponents on both sides of this issue. The average temperature in the Antarctica is 109 degrees below zero. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antarctica#Climate It seems to me 108 below (one degree warmer) is still pretty cold and not enough to melt anything. But there are those that say it will.

Back in the '70s all the hype was about global COOLING and another ice age was coming. I remember that they blamed pollution for that too. They said that all the pollution was darkening the skies and not as much sun was coming through so the earth was cooling off. It took many years to discovere that they were mistaken and it was all just hype. So when someone says, "the sky is falling" don't believe everything you hear on either side of the issue. There are Spin Doctors galore out there.

Most of the time people will form an opinion and not really be informed about the subject with which they become so opinionated about. So it's best that you not form your opinions from other's opinions, (as in this forum) but on the facts presented. (Many do not provide any proof or links to prove their point, just their opinion.) With that said we do have a responsibilty to do our part by doing whatever is within your power to keep our planet alive and well.

I hope that helps...

The current warm weather in NY and other parts of the world which are supposed to be cold can not be attributed to global warming. Though global warming is a catastrophe in itself. Scientists are still carrying out research on the matter. In a short term it could be good for countries in the northern hemisphere, in that summers would be longer, the farming season too will be longer, less energy use. But what really would happen is the due to the raise in temperatures the ice at the poles would start to melt, increasing the volume of water in the seas and oceans there by causing floodings in many places. for example Alaska would be underwater completely. Other effects are still being studied. I'm an Environment Protection Engineering student. I know what I'm talking about.

Lets start from the basics. If you're going to take the temperature of the earth, maybe New York is where you put the thermometer. But I doubt it.

I'm an old geezer I remember running around barefooted in shorts and tee shirt on christmas day back in the early 60's. I also remember back in the mid 70's with snow on the ground for 45 days (both in western Ark) And watching the specials and reading the warnings of the comming ice age. See the April 1975 issue of Newsweek.

I've also heard that the polar caps on Mars have also been receding. I don't think driving SUV's, or burning fossil fuels has anything to do with increasing temperatures on Mars. I'm more inclined to believe that increases in solar radiation have more to do with increases in mean temperatures here on earth and on Mars. I also think it is likely to to reverse itself. After all we've had many ice ages.

I'd be more concerned about an ice age. I think we can survive increased growing seasons and milder weather alot better than we can survive another ice age, with the failed crops and increased demand for energy.

Warming could spur "evolution explosion": study
Mon Jan 8, 2007

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Fast-growing weeds have evolved over a few generations to adapt to climate change, which could signal the start of an "evolution explosion" in response to global warming, scientists reported on Monday.
This means that the weeds will likely keep up with any attempts to develop crops that can adapt to global warming, said Arthur Weis, a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of California, Irvine.
The quick-growing weedy plant known as field mustard showed the ability to change reproductive patterns over a period of just seven years, Weis said.
Weis and his colleagues cultivated two sets of mustard seeds in a greenhouse: one set collected in 1997, just before a five-year
drought, and a second set collected in 2004, after the drought ended.
But some long-lived species will not have the capacity to adapt so quickly, because their life cycles are so long.

It's actually very bad. It's so evident that we are heading to catastrophe, but still, some presidents, dictators and prime ministers are not acting. The US causes 25% of the polution that exist now. And it's not doing anything to stop that. Weel, in California, they are doing some change, that's it.
It's hotter all around the world. Here, it should have snowed like about a month ago, but still nothing.
Well, as some heads of nations are not acting, we have to.
Recycle, Use less of, Reuse.
If everyone does that, everything'll be fine.

Weather patterns go in cycles. This year the West received higher than normal snow fall while other parts of the country was warmer. Numbers can be shown to mean anything a person wants them to show.

The current warm weather in the US has
nothing to do with global warming. Remember
last year was extra cold?

Same think here in Toronto. There still isn't any snow which is unheard of. Seriously, we are really messed up.

We don't have to wait for the government to smarten up and do something. We can all do small things ourselves.

The recent warm spell in NY is not an indication of general warming of the globe.

It is but a single data point in a sea of data.
