No. Never upgrade to the first release of any Microsoft operating system. They never get it right until the second try. The only exception I can think of was WIndows 2000

XP needed SP2 to be usable.
ME tanked and they never did fix it.
Win98 needed Win98 SE
Win95 needed release B (Release A was only FAT 16)
NT became stable with 4.0
Win3.10... well that took 3.1 tries to get right.
Dos 6.22 - 6.0 was worthless, they added compression that destroyed data with 6.2 and fixed THAT problem with 6.22

You get the picture I take it? Wait a year for the equipment to come down in price, and Microsoft to fix most of its bugs.

I would say 'definitely not right now'. It's been rushed to market so there are probably quite a few bugs to iron out. Wait for service pack one.

Also, what do you think it offers you over what you currently do with XP? Looking at the feature set on the MS website, do you see anything that you sorely miss?

I didn't, and my team has just decided (we support some 2000+ workstations) to not upgrade at least until late 2008.

Finally, I think this (rather technical) analysis makes a good case for NOT ever upgrading to vista but getting a mac or installing linux.

Right now i would say no , I tested the last Vista RC1 Beta and there was a major lack of drivers for current devices, and games don't all work ok. It's too early to buy it. Wait till at least SP1 is released.

It will be worth upgrading in about 2 years, after microsoft finishes with all the bug patches that will be coming out for it.
