Apparently assume that I'll watch them. I did have one family drop their two kids off at my house the first day of summer break.
Seriously, our local Y has a great summer program, that's relatively inexpensive and really great. They swim, do lunch, have lots of field trips and games. You might check into that, as well as local daycares or mom's day out, they have special programs in the summer for older children. Local public schools also have summer programs. Usually they start signing up in February, so I'd give it a call around now.
A lot depends on the age of the child, really. You could hire a teenager to watch the children. If there are several families who take their kids to work, mom in the morning, dad in the afternoon. Or families get one day off a week and rotate...mom A watches all the kids on monday, dad B on tuesday, etc. Kids over 12 or 13 should take a red cross babysitting class and can stay home alone (with LOTS of training, and only if mature enough to do so)
Good luck, I really do understand it's not easy. We've made some sacrifices to life style so that I could stay home. This is one of the times I'm thankful.

I am forunate enough to be able to work from home but my neighbors and friends all put their kids into the Chicago Park District summer programs or the YMCA. They do lots of outdoors activities and field trips in both programs. The little ones (under 5) go to a regular day care.

Depends on the situation. My kids go to a relative's house (Grandma/Grandpa, Aunt, Uncle) for two to three weeks, then they are in YMCA Camp or at a neighbor's house(who is a stay at home mom) for the rest of the summer. Sometimes the oldest goes to work with his dad.

I'm lucky enough to have a young retired parent, so my son goes and spends the summer with my mom and dad. Mom hangs out and does stuff with him during the day until my dad comes home, then he gets some time with grandpa.

I would say the YMCA. Usually very close to home and the kids have a blast. You could also ask a stay at home parent from your child's classroom.

My mom sent me to the "Working Parent program" at the YMCA.
It was great. We went to the beach, learned to swim, played basketball, went on field trips, etc.

Hire a stay at home mom, put them in daycare, have them watched by family (grandma/grandpa), hire a nanny, etc.
