For a citizen, I don't think there is a limit. For a green card holder it is 12 months.

The answers above are correct. You can come in the US on an unexpired green card after a temporary absence of less than one year. You need a travel document if your absence is between 1 and 2 years.

If you have a green card it is 11 months you have to be back in the country before 1 year goes by.
