My toddler is pickier than picky. I have tried repeatedly to feed her what we eat. I now give her a basic toddler menu:chicken fingers (dino buddies),hot dogs, mac and cheese. I do get her to eat carrots with dinner, peaches with lunch and raisins with breakfast. The fruit part takes some struggling so I'm happy that she eats the other things. We do what we have to do! They're not starving, that's how I look at it!

Well, I have a 3-1/2 and a 2y.o., and also I'm pregnant with morning sickness... so right now... NO WAY! I haven't really cook for a while, I have been fixing the children and hubby with sandwiches, porridge, pasta an salads, but we always sit all together (even when someone has already eaten).

When I am feeling less sick, I just cook a big pot of stew, chicken, beans or whatever and put them in containers in the freezer to use in critical days.

Before being pregnant, with just my two babies, I started cooking dinner in the morning and go on during the day while they left me some free time, almost every day or two.

I'm lucky to have a husband who doesn't care about having a 'well fixed' supper, if I don't cook he just make himself a sandwich, but I don't like to have my family eating that way, so I try to cook well as much as I can.

My 3-1/2 is a picky eater and waste food too, so I just don't give him a Lot of new complicated things, and always keep a little pasta and fruits at hand.

Skip the canned stuff at all cost - it's okay once in a while but loaded with sodium your kids don't need.

My boyfriend works late (until 6 am sometimes) so I understand being basically a single mom in the evenings. I stick chicken breasts in the oven AFTER dinner (when it's less chaotic) and cook a few to use over the next couple days. Chop them up and add to pasta, make healthy burritos, etc. I buy low sodium beef broth and pre-chopped veggies. Dump together, add noodles or rice and you've got a decent soup. Get a crock pot, too.

It's true, you have to be WAY more organized to pull this off, but you're setting the eating habits for your children for the rest of their lives!

ps: That eight year old should be both helping and learning not to waste food.

I cook.... It is hard, but I do it. I work a full time job and commute 45 miles each way. My husband works also and my son is 10 months old.... I try to find things that are easy....crockpot meals are wonderful....I cook big on the weekends and eat leftovers Monday.....Salads or rice are a base of many meals....We top salads with tuna, chicken, whatever....lazy days I throw some groundbeef in a pan with some rice and beans and season it up.... It's not easy but I think we should still keep cooking!

PS. No one ever said you can't have pancakes for dinner!

I don't have time to really cook any really good meals anymore. My husband doesn't come home until around 8 also, so he doesn't eat dinner and I only have my 13 and 18 year old at home. Most of the time it is quick and easy meals like hot dogs, frozen foods and ramen. The only time I cook is on the week ends.

I cook most of the time.

If hubby will be really late getting home, the kids and I might do something really simple like a frozen pizza, grilled cheese sandwiches or pancakes for dinner.

I probably cook a sit-down meal 6 out of 7 nights.

During outdoor soccer (spring/fall) we do have a picnic one night a week at the soccer field. Usually just cheese and crackers or sandwiches.

I cook.. but I also have snack nights.. Make it fun.. Have your daughter help you make the meals.. good time to be together..that way she won't waste food ..and.. she can even pick something she would like to eat with the meal. This way it teaches her to cook, eat healthy, you get to have fun together and she can even learn how to clean up along the way.. Teaching her responsibilities... Just a thought. I have 2 daughters one 11 and the other 16.. They love to cook now.. Sometimes the tell me they want to cook the whole meal..

I make food on the weekend and freeze it for him because he doesn't keep regular hours. I use those plastic Glad containers and make 5 portions for the weekdays. Having a home cooked meal in the freezer is better than the stuff you get at the store and there is more of it.
You can make anything and freeze it i made a huge pot of soup and froze portions, also you can make Thai food with rice and put it portion containers. It saves all kinds of time and money.
The food you mentioned is fine for the kids but he needs something with a bit more sustenance.

I cook - at least one "real" meal a day. Normally for dinner I will make a "real" meal, but for lunch and breakfast I will often take the easy way out and use canned dishes or frozen items. Even when my husband isn't home for dinner, I always try to make sure my kids have a well rounded dinner that is from scratch. It makes me feel better - some days I will make muffins or homemade cinnamon rolls for breakfast, but lunch is almost always something easy.

We sit down as a family (mom, dad, 2 kids) 3-4 times a week. It is hard but we do it. We talk and learn about what is going on. I could care less about the meal, sometimes it is take out and other times it is home-made. Either way talking to your kids over a meal is very important. Now and later.
