You bet they are reliable. I have owned a Magnum RT AWD with the 5.7L Hemi with the MDS (multi-displacement system) deactivates from 8 cylinder mode to 4 cylinder mode. The Magnum RT AWD I had usually got 15 to 17 MPG City and 21 to 24 MPG city. Not bad for 340HP and AWD.
I never had one issue with this motor, very quiet at idle and very throaty when you get on the gas. Also, the power is incredible with 340HP in 5.7L Magnums, Chargers & 300C's
Also, the 6.1L Hemi's are incredible as I traded my Magnum AWD RT for a SRT8 version. Lots of power with the 425HP motor no issues at all with the motor. These motors don't have the MDS fuel saving system like the 5.7L Hemis. However, I do get a pretty respectible 14 to 16MPG City and 20 to 24 MPG highway with my MSRT8. This is usually accounts for Full Throttle take offs. Usually the new Mustang GT's are sucking my SRT8's exhaust!
I have talked with many others and I have yet to talk with someone panning the new Hemi motors, they have been very impressed with the power and reliablity.
I give thumbs up for the 5.7L Hemi MDS and big thumbs up for the 6.1L Hemi!

I am neither pro or con on this. Yes the motor is not a true Hemi. But as being such any performance motor is prone to be taken advantage of. As to how good it is will be based on how much the owner kicks the crap out of it. You can have 2 identical cars , and 1 will outlast the other by 2 times just because it`s taken care of. Back in 85 Dodge brought out the Caravan with a Mitsubishi 2.6. Most of these motors were replaced under warranty within 40k km. All because of a bad diaphragm in the choke pull off. Thousands of motors were pulled before they found the problem. I had1 of those motors, found the problem , Chrysler gave me a new motor and a test van . After 8 years and 300k km or roughly 180 miles , it still ran great, Oil changes done on time, and routine upkeep will make sure anything will keep going . Maybe even a brand new 2010 Camero. Even they can last a year or 2 if you want something that rattles apart from GM`s quality control dept. They are still putting screws in their body panels from a mistaken order in the 80`s when someone added 3 zeros to the purchase order. In fact , thats the last time that GM actually made a real Camero. Now they just try and follow Ford and Chrysler. Whose but was in a sling and cried wolf the most lately? Now they will suck the hind tit just to stay in the game. 80% of GM trucks are still on the road compared to 50% Dodge and Ford. Only thing is, those GM`s are either on the side of the road or being towed to the wreckers by the other 2

The new Hemi's are evolved from the original LA small block which has been around in one form or another since 1964. It's a very reliable and solid design which you should have few if any problems with. Other engines from the LA family include the 318 wedge which is legendary for it's reliability.

at first i believe they had some cam bearing problems or something...but that was like the first two years they were out. they are pretty reliable, but i don't think they evolve from the old hemi's like people are saying...i think it's a completely different design...and the heads are changed too. but that's just what i've heard.

They are without a doubt reliable. But the Mpg rating is based on the EPA 50 mph highway so its a little out there more like 17 if you try.

Absolutely, especially if its the one that shuts down 4 cylinders at cruising speeds. I recently spoke to a guy that had a new pick -up. He was getting well over 20 mpg. at cruising speeds. Supposedly Dodge trucks have a new trans. manufacturer which hopefully will be more reliable. Good Luck.
