Your choice of pistols depends more on your experience and what use you intend it for. If you are average size but have little experience with pistols, I would suggest a revolver over a semi-auto, as they are simpler to shoot and maintain. Ask for advice at a local reputable gun shop, as well; most firearms dealers are more than happy to oblige.
Most of all, especially if you are a novice, invest in safety and operating instruction, whichever pistol you decide to buy.

Extremely popular calibers today are: 9mm and 40 caliber for semi auto handguns.

Ruger, Browning and Glock all make excellent pistols in those sizes.

The one factor that I spend more time on after deciding the caliber is the fit and heft of the pistol. Spend some time with the gun in your hand before buying. Many ranges will rent guns and that is an excellent way to get some "hands-on" time.

Invest some time in reading up on guns, dont be swayed by movies or gangster style guns, get the gun that fits your hand and feels best for your grip and needs.
