I am hoping I can buy a state of the art camera much cheaper than in the UK

yes it is a very good place to buy a digital camera i was out there about 3 years ago and bought a DVD camera at about a third of the price you can buy it in the UK and a bit of advice make sure you haggle with them about the price and when travelling carry the camera with you don't leave it in the box then customs cant prove where you bought it

Whilst it may be cheaper, you might well have problems back in the UK should you require warranty work ro be done on it. It is more than likely that the UK importer would not honour a warranty valid in Shanghai. If you can persuade customs that it is used and not liable for duty very good, but if not you may well have to pay import duty and VAT on it.

I wouldn't go there just to buy a camera. You really have to know what you want and if you need help or service, you are better off buying from close to home. Supporting your local camera shop is always a better bet.
