How do you support denying homosexual couples the same legal standing/benefits of marriage as heterosexual couples?
I understand you may not allow it in your church, but how does that transfer to the secular/legal arena?
What if America were a muslim majority and that majority decided that those who make pictures of Muhammed would not have the same legal protections as others, and would be censored? Would that religious decision be ok?

Oooh. I like this question! I can't wait to see what they'll say, although I'm afraid it'll be along the lines of:

"Sin is wrong and homosexuality is a sin. Therefore, it's right and moral to outlaw it. Mohammad was a quack, so it's wrong to outlaw making pictures of him. The Bible says so."

Still, here's hoping!

Your examples do not translate. Islam also says homosexuality is wrong. If America was a majority Muslim then yes, the majority rules and I suspect there would be a lot of things different...not just Mohammed's picture.

But I digress.....

To answer your base question.....yes, church and state should be separated, but that doesn't mean the two do not influence each other. The basic laws such as don't steal and murder could be ascribed to religion....but because most of us agree with them they are "okay".

I am a fundamentalist Christian, but to be honest, I have no strong opinion regarding homosexual unions one way or the other. I do believe the lifestyle goes against God, but most people's lifestyle goes against God (swingers, drug users, gluttons, thieves, etc). We are a work in progress and must overcome the individual "thorns in our flesh" (no pun intended).

If I was in charge: The civil and legal matters, such as inheritance, visitation rights, tax status and so forth, that currently go with what we call "marriage" would be available to everyone regardless of sexual preference. Civil marriage would be a contract matter with standardized terms (as to age of consent, degree of consanguinuity, etc. which currently vary between states) and would cover all the legal rights and responsibilities. The civil marriage would be finalized as the minute the couple signs an agreement to do so before a court clerk and/or another appropriate official. Religious marriage would be optional, and would be completely up to the couple and any institution or minister they ask to perform the service for them. No church or minister would be forced to perform anything they find objectionable, but neither could they deny a couple the right to go elsewhere for such service. Let the state deal with civil matters; let the churches deal with matters of the spirit. That's just my take on it. I am a legal Wiccan minister, authorized to perform marriages, and would be more than willing to perform gay or lesbian marriages if it were legal in my state.

Here is the definitive answer. People get upset about gay marriage because people are inherently afraid of anything that is different from their own value set. Gay marriage is objectionable to crazed, militant "Christians" NOT because "Jesus hates fags" or "God doesn't allow gay marriage," but because they, themselves are not gay and can't understand why two men or two women could ever be in love.

People object to gay marriage for the same reason that black people weren't treated as humans before the Civil Rights Movement - because they are different. For no other reason than that, they are willing to treat people as though they are animals - to the point of defending their closed-minded, narrow viewpoint by saying, "What next? Can I marry my dog?" That ALWAYS gets me - comparing the marriage of two people in love to bestiality.

They say the Bible says homosexuality is a sin. Fine. It also says menstruation is a sin. (Leviticus 15 - check it out.) So I guess all women with a menstrual flow are going to hell.

And those who are against gay marriage because they feel it weakens the institution - well, what can I say? Clearly, they shouldn't be married because they have no faith in the institution.

But put simply, it's fear. Despite what they say... it's fear.

whilst I have mixed feelings about Gay marriage I do understand why it is desired and is not totaly a sexual thing I have Gays amoung the folks I call my friends It is heartbreaking when an adopted child is sick in the hospital and only legal kin are allowed to visit or when folks have been together for decades and cant get insurance for each other !I truly understand !maybee civil unions would be the answer and for the reasons I quoted we do need something !yes in the scripture the act of homosexuality is a sin but we all need to remember that none of us are sinless and we are clearly told we are not to judge others this should be left to our compassionate loving God and not to bitter hollier than though sinners God may hate a sin (any sin)whilst he still loves the sinner!
23. for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
24. and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

I don't care about the sexual preferences of others. I have no right to get into other life's. My religion (well my family's, I just believe in my God and that he is kind, and loves us) doesn't allow it, and I know many others don't, either.

Sorry to say, but the US is hypocritical. They don't allow religion in schools, work, nor politics. Yet, they don't want to allow homo sexual marriages, for whatever reason they want to say, but we all now it's because of their religion or others. I thought we all had freedom of religion, and speech. Freedom of anything as long as we're not assaulting or killing anyone. I just don't think it's fair, nor right to deny anyone marriage in that way, nor tell them what to feel. It's just wrong.

Matrimony is something that God Created, therefore is something sacred, As the World goes down and becoming way apart from God, Man has decided to go against God's word. Let me tell you that Marriage could be something political, that is because we live in a different society 21st century. but marriage has it fundaments based on Religious belief.

God said - It's not good for a man to be alone i will make him a helper/partner, So god created the woman (Read Genesis)

then he said.

MAN will leave his father /mother and will united with his wife and they will become one.

This world is going against God. so marriage between two men and two women is against God/ society for the most part.

Who exactly are you talking to? I am a Christian and I support all people to do and say as they please. I'm not going to go marry a woman becuase that's not the sex I am attracted to, but if you are a woman and would like to marry a woman, more power to you & God Bless.....please don't lump everyone in a same category--that's why christianity is getting a horrible name. There are MANY MANY Christians who are loving and caring and support free will, the freedom to choose and live as you wish and to get married to the person of your desire....

I have seen the idiots on here say that if we allow gay marriage that we should allow polygamy or marrying a talking donkey.
I kid you not. The ignorance is rampant!
