I've been coloring my hair for years and now with advice from Loreal , trying to darken blonde, (not recommended) it is over processed. To stop color from getting on already colored hair when dying the roots I was told by a friend to saturate the colored hair with shampoo or conditioner so that color will not penetrate the already colored hair. Don't stylists do this?

No. At the stylists', they wash and dry your hair, so it's clean and takes the chemicals evenly, just like the ones at home say to do.
Trim your hair. If you have a lot of damage, It will lessen the weight of your hair at the roots, and help stop the perpetual cycle of cut, dye, damage, cut..... And help take the new color better/ more evenly. This is a simple trim, and if you want to save a little $, have a friend/ someone you trust do it, my husband cuts mine. (Not the style cut, just the maintenance cut.)
You might want to try a Mayonnaise treatment after you do dye it (sit with it on for about an hour), it might help.
