I am in college, been dating my boyfriend since senior year of high school, so we've been together for years. This is the second time his mom is cooking dinner for me. I brought a box of chocolates last time. What is customary to bring as a guest?

I'm 20 years old (a few more months till 21), so I feel it is inappropriate to bring wine.

If you didn't know her too well, I'd say wine (if you're old enough to buy) or a dessert, but since you've known (or at least been acquainted) for several years, go for the personal touch. If you bring flowers, bring her favorite flowers (find out from your boyfriend if you don't know).

Does she like something in particular, like does she decorate her kitchen with roosters or cows or something? Bring something small that fits in that theme (even if it's just a matter of putting a little rooster ornament on some ribbon and tying it around the bakery cake that you bring). You know, something that says you appreciate not only the dinner, but the lady who's making it. Be creative! She'll definitely appreciate it!

I'm impressed that you're concerned about this! I know way too many people who don't even think of hospitality gifts these days. :-)

I think the adage of "It's the thought that counts" is the most important thing (although being tasteful is good too!).

How well do you know your boyfriend's family? Is anyone in the family a coffee drinker? Perhaps a small package of coffee (ground, in case they don't have a grinder) to enjoy after dinner?

Chocolate covered fruit might make a good choice - and it's somewhat healthier than straight chocolate. If you've got a kitchen or kitchenette available, homemade cookies could be fun.

These days, I think that matching the gift to the person (and sometimes the formality of the event) matters more than the item itself.

While wine is almost always well received, to me it's almost become cliche, and we've established that purchasing it is a challenge at the moment. :-)

In your place, I wouldn't hesitate to ask my boyfriend a few questions to see if he could shed some light on what she might like, or if there is a side dish you could contribute to the meal, but reality says that won't always shed enough light on the subject.

Good Luck!

dont do the box of chocolates again, thats for sure. This time try and find out what she's cooking and either bring a dessert to compliment the meal or a bottle of wine to go with the meal. Preferably dessert, because everybody may not drink or like wine. And what human doesnt like a good straight from the bakery dessert? Cake, or a pie.

btw, you sound like a nice considerate young lady...so if you and ole boy dont work out....ahem. jk maybe

What woman doesn't like flowers or even a plant? How about dessert - like a cake or pie, even brownies or cookies. Since you're not 21, I would not suggest wine or any alcohol. It's always nice to bring something - call and offer, maybe even a salad would do if it's pasta night.

Good Luck :)

Flowers from a florist can be pretty pricey...in the neighborhood of $35, and the ones in the grocery store are pretty cheesy. You brought the chocolates last time, and are too young to bring wine.

Sooo, I would go to a better bakery and buy a fresh made cheese cake to bring, perhaps one with fresh fruit on top. I'm sure your boyfriend can advise you as to what flavor to choose.
I know I'd be thrilled to get one of those.

Bread, a salad or dessert. You can have your boyfriend check with his mom or ask him what he thinks you should bring. Be prepared to hear the "oh nothing". I'd suggest Wine, but I don't know if your boyfriends family drinks plus you are in college and more than likely on a budget. Have a nice time :)

I always took a nice candle, or a picture frame. A little pricer are nice gift baskets from places like world market or willams sanoma. I would go with the candle though, since you are a college student and probably don't have alot of extra cash lying around.

You sound so considerate and the fact that you won't take wine because of your age shows your high level of maturity and class.

Take her flowers. She'll love them and your boyfirend will also realize that you like flowers and may just surprise you with the same sometime.

A small bouquet of fresh flowers. She will be able to enjoy them for a few days after the dinner.
