If you want to go close, Snow Summit and Bear Mountain are considered the best ski areas locally. If you are an advanced skiier, I would go to Bear Mountain. Otherwise, I would go to Snow Summit. They have the best coverage, snowmaking, facilities, etc. They are located in Big Bear. www.snowsummit.com or www.bigbearmountain.com

If you don't mind a 6 hour drive, you should drive up to Mammoth Mountain. It has more snow, more runs, and a much larger mountain than any SoCal resorts. You can actually ski all morning or afternoon and not cross your path once (unless you are incredibly fast skiier). There are 26 lifts, 2 gondolas, and some trails over 2 miles long. www.mammothmountain.com

Either way, always carry chains.

Mammouth has the best skiing, about a 5 hour drive.
Mountain high is the closest and easiest to get to (about an hour).

Bear Mountain, I once met Jason Hervey from the Wonder Years there, I was on the same chairlift with him and his girlfriend... later we tag teamed her back at his hotel room. Bear Mountain rocks!

big bear or mountain high...big bear a bit nicer...mountain high a bit less crowded and easier in terms of distance, driving (you wont need chains) etc.
