I leave for Ft. Benning in a month or so to go to basic training (11B). I would greatly appreciate any help with suggestions, tips and things specific to Benning and also things that I should memorize (like a code, creed or song for Benning). I am scared like crazy and could really use some help, thanks.

PS. Certain sites say I should memorize the soldiers creed (I am a warrior and a member of a team etc..) and others say the soldiers code (a protector of the greatest nation on earth sworn to uphold, etc...). Which one (or both) is necessary?

First off, congratulations on embarking on one of the greatest adventures you will ever have. I went thru Benning back in the late '80s and became an 11B.
The best advice I can give you is to make sure you are in good, if not excellent physical shape. Be sure to run daily and to do both push ups and sit ups. From memory, these are the things that most people have a problem with. As for memorizing anything before you go, other than the rank structure or the phonetic alphabet, I cannot think of anything.
Memorizing the code or the creed wasn't required when I went thru, but it never hurts.
One last piece of advice, always do you best and help each other to excell at everytask.

Thanks for serving! You will do fine at Ft Benning. Go there ready to learn all they have to teach you with an open mind and a shut mouth. Only answer when asked to answer and never volunteer information. Yes Sir and No Sir are going to be the order of the weeks ahead. It's okay to be scared like crazy but don't let that fear weaken you. I have a son in and a nephew in and a neice who just finished her service. They were scared, too, but they did alright. Just remember some of us out here who support you and are pulling for you. You'll make it. God Bless!

Don't do what I did many years ago. I decided to bring some books, just some light reading. Somewhere, those books rest on a bookshelf of a retired NCO. But really, good running shoes are a must. A change of clothing but they will provide nearly everything else. Good luck and remember: Don't take anything personally. The NCOs who are giving you all get out went through it, too. It's one of life's more interesting experiences.

As an ex-military instructor, I used to hate the hard corps kiddies that came in thinking they're already half as good as me. Don't learn a thing until you're there and being taught. Having a clean slate is the best way to learn all that will be given to you. And it's allot. The best way to prepare for your basic is to work out. There's nothing worse than someone who knows their stuff but washes out because they can't keep up with the patrol.

It's the instructor's job to teach you, not the Internet's. It's good to be keen but calm down a couple notches. It's good to be nervous to. The smart are scared. Remember that in a couple years when you get a warning order for a tour.

Yes, memorize this; A Sergeant is a Sergeant, call them that. An Officer is "SIR" for men and "MA'AM" for women, call them that. Keep your mouth shut unless spoken to. Keep your ears open at all times and pay attention to details. NEVER complain. Do Not volunteer for ANYTHING. Watch your pals back. Share your water with a friend. When it looks like you can't possibly take it any more, TAKE SOME MORE! Go to mass on Sundays and write or call your family EVERY chance you get. Good Luck to you.

I have no specific tips... I went through Navy Basic long long ago !!

A question of my own: Do recruits still have to memorize their "General Orders" ?

Good luck and stay safe. I'm proud of you for serving and don't mind my tax-dollars paying MILITARY salaries.

Congrats and welcome to the Infantry brotherhood. All the above are great hints. Keep your head down, pay attention and listen, work hard, and DON'T fall out of runs or roadmarches... you'll do fine. oh... GET YOURSELF AN AIRBORNE SLOT!
