My husband is a retired marine, and I was Air Force. I can tell you that you probably want to rethink your plans. I have a young lady (21) who works with me who was a marine also and we swap stories.

While I think you have a wonderful goal, I think you will be very very disappointed if you make this your career move. Women marines are not really respected and their career is often more difficult than it should be. Keep in mind, they are marines. Marines go to war. By law, women can not "fill traditional combat roles" however, understand that support roles find themselves on the front lines. If you really want to fight a war, the Army would be better suited.

Both Branches of Service have very strenuous basic training programs both physically and mentally and you must be prepared. Many times, women do not find themselves emotionally prepared to deal with the "mental challenges" they face in basic training.

I would encourage you to join the Air Force as it is more "friendly" toward women, especially if you would consider making this a 20 year career. I'll be happy to tell you more, if interested.

Good Luck with your decision whichever you choose.

My daughter went to Marine boot camp. Because of a previous back injury she was discharged on a "convenience of the government" discharge. She said that most women probably shouldn't try to be a Marine. Be ready for the hardest and possibly the lonliest weeks of your life. If it's right for you, just remember, boot camp ends. After that, you will see why they put you through what they do. You have to do what you are told without question. They have to break your habit of thinking first. If you aren't sure, try another branch of service. God Bless you for your desire to serve your county! Whichever branch you go with, you will be glad you did it!

Good for you!

My sister in law is a marine and she absolutely loves it. She says that the basic training was difficult , but was all worth it.
