Am I the only one repulsed by this treatment of women in islam? I don't want muslimah posting how liberating islam is for you - the facts are there to see. And yes, I have read the koran and understand islam, so don't come out with the 'you don't understand islam' baloney.

I think of it as a gross violation of equal rights.

I think we should define it as freedom from oppression, but only if that opinion is shared by the Islamic faith. I do, however, support the right of a religion/culture to define their own ground rules. The problem comes, when you try to practise these in a non-Muslim country that is disapproving of some of it's beliefs. This indeed, presents a real problem. Feminists, however, have never been interested in equality, because their dislike of the male sex, drives them toward subjugation. Men and women have always been equal in the moral sense, but they are not the same, and should occupy roles in society which reflects those differences. Women, have always had more personal power arising out of their sexuality. Men, on the other hand, held a less important power base outside the home. The workplace.

Unfortunately, feminists now think that they have a right to interfere in Muslim practises, and, having held off for a long time, think that they have a fair wind behind them. It should be interesting.

'Agneisq', Don't lecture me, I am speaking from long hard experience of those at the forefront of feminism (not all women). Your own personal opinions about yourself, will not change that. Obsession with promoting the interests of your own sex, is not a particularly appealing virtue.

Don't start with this crap. Loads of these websites are made to make Islam look bad.

"And yes, I have read the koran and understand islam," - YOU DON'T! At least don't say you understand something and use a question like this. Islam is the reason why women are allowed to work, get an education, have the rights to speak, own land and decide on marriage and divorce etc. In Islam women have their rights, so clearly with this question you are proving that you actually DON'T know anything. We had rights back then, that nobody had in these countries until not so long ago, so don't just sit there and pretend like you actually know about Islam.

Do us a favour, and actually READ the Quran.

Sometimes I'm really chocked about the stupidity in this site (I'm referring to the people who answer, not the asker, you have a bit of a point, I'll get back to you soon) 1. God and Allah are the same, they simply have different names in different religions. That's why the big three are often referred to as "the sister religions", they all have the same God. You can't criticize Allah without criticizing God. 2. The Bible says that a woman is a man's property, so christianity isn't really that big on female rights either. 3. Claiming that all muslims are talibans and woman beaters and terrorists is just low. Not all muslims are the same. Plus there are plenty woman beaters and terrorists who aren't muslims. I have more but I'm getting tired, so back to you dear asker: That's what scholars say, but what does the koran say?

I trhink the problem is more cultural - the Koran sets out women's rights, but most of the cultures where Islam has taken hold (for example, that of Saudi Arabia, which is the world's greatest exporter of a particular type of Islam, ie Wahhabism) seem to be cultures where women are not highly thought of, and so the men there have disregarded many of the rights their women are guaranteed by the Koran, and treated them according to long-standing cultural rules, ie, as inferiors with few if any legal rights.

Which, in my book, is typical of the patriarchal nonsense we have been subjected to by many cultures for centuries.

Veritas - I have never read such a load of nonsense in my life! I am a feminist, and I can assure you I don't dislike men, nor am I interested in subjugation!! [rolls eyes]

robedzombiesoul - don't judge all Western women by the 'half dressed' variety you see. Though dressing like that is their choice, and as such, none of your business.

I can do everything you do, and am under no pressure to show off any part of my body to anyone - I dress modestly, through choice, I work and keep my own money. I don't worry about impressing strange men. Or even strange women. But I am also under no pressure to wear a scarf or a veil. And let's face it, you wear that to prove to other Moslems of both sexes that you are modest/devout/whatever. Otherwise, what's the point? God, or Allah, knows how devout you are in your heart, so any outward show is for other *people*, not for your deity.

That picture is a fake made by morons like you and the Western media to bash Islam and think all Muslimah need to be "liberated". Which we don't. Unlike in Judaism and Christianity where women are seen as the sole bearers of sin and guilt because of the fall and are seen as sex objects Muslimah like myself are liberted from having to show off half our chests for strange men and wear stupid makeup and basically walk around half naked all the time in society in order to pleasure and impress strange men that all women in the West seem to be doing. In Islam women are equal to men and we can work if we want, keep all our money we earn, do not have to contribute to financial liabilitites, can get an education, etc. Women are diamonds in Islam and mothers are especially honored. We are respected for our minds and not our bodies. We dress modestly to please ALLAH and so as not to appear like sex objects. We don't worry about pleasing or impressing strange men. And yes you as well as the rest of the West fail to understand how good Muslimah are treated in Islam. And Islam blames both Adam(PBUH*) and Eve for the fall.

Sorry that you do not understand Islam. I will not quote from the Quran only my own life.

I am Muslim married with 2 sons

I am a student. I have 2 BAs and working toward my masters. I am employed. I do what I want when I want.

Yes I will say that you do not understand Islam.

Before I was married to a Christian man who was controlling and abusive. He would cheat on me and get upset anytime I would find out.

Islam gave me strength and freedom that you will never understand

That's it........ you're a Muslim woman? Every question you ask is related to Muslims and Islam. You have a hate for your own faith that you can't voice so you voice it on here under a false secure name.

I've seen a documentary about women wishing to pray in the same temple as the men. They were treated harshly by the muslin men (and women married to the men in leadership roles ) and faced physical and verbal abuse.

You need to stop venting your anger on here as it makes you come across as a bitter person.

There is true equality in Islam. (And I am not a Muslim-just someone who does her homework and learns).

It is the culture, not the religion that causes many things you do not like. And, you are referring to cultures that are not in all Muslim countries. You are just picking the ones you can take issue with. Also, you can find this same mentality in cultures that are not Muslim countries.

You have been letting the media and hate mongers tell you what to believe.
