That depends on the chicken. Some Benny's can have extreamly short or extreamly long talons.Lavendars also have longer talons. Rhode island Reds, being one of the larger breeds have suprisingly short talons.

The hens don't have that long of nails 1/2 inch long and if they can scratch on the ground it files them down a lot. but the rosters grow spurs which aren't on there toes but up just above the feet (use for fighting) which can get very long (+2 inches) and dangerous.

They can. However, on chickens you would call them spurs.
That is why Napoleon Dynamite could not get the chicken guy to understand him. He said talons but he should have said spurs.

Here's a story about damage caused by rooster spurs: http://pct-hike.randsco.com/journal/j-0404.html The victim received a blow to the left knee strong enough to break the skin.
And another one: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,722500,00.html Back in 1926, a rooster spurred a blacksmith in the knee, causing paralysis.
As you probably know, roosters in cockfights often kill each other by spurring the eye of their opponent.
Here's how you remove the spur: http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/farmlife/msg041126348339.html?3

Roosters, the males, have spurs and yes they can be quite large and nasty. They are used for protection. Hens do not get spurs.
