Shortly before WWII, a German Luthran Pastor named Dietrich Bonhoeffer gave a speach to church and world leaders in the United Kingdom. It went something like this:
"'I will hear what God, The Lord, will speak, for he will speak Peace unto his people, unto his saints.' Psalm 85:5
How does this peace come about? Is it through the machinations of men? Or through their politics or economics? Perhaps it comes from power, from rearmament. No. Man made efforts toward peace bring about the temporary feelings of safety and security, but not real peace. That's because we often confuse peace with safety. They are not the same.
Peace is a great venture; it's a dare to trust God completely. Peace requires us to give up our illusions of safety and security, our schemes and plans, in order to rely on All Mighty God alone. Will there still be battles? Yes! But battles are won, not with weapons, but with God. They are won where the way leads to the cross.
So how will peace come about? Will it come through individual Christians who long for it? No, single voices are easily snuffed out by those who oppose peace. Only through the wholly and united Church of Christ can the world 'peace' be spoken.
We can do it today. We can send out a call for peace, but we must hurry! The hour is late. So why are we waiting? What are we waiting for? How can we wait, when the world, waits for us?" - Dietrich Bonhoeffer
I understand that not everyone reading this is christian, but there is something here that we must all come to see.
There is a profound difference between true lasting peace and temporary times of safety and security.
In any situation that involves war or unsettled politics or anything of that sort, we must ask ourselves what will bring a lasting peace to the situation verses just a temporary patch that simply sluffs the problem aside to fester for a few more years.

There are two types of peace. First there is the peace that comes from lack of conflict. Secondly, there is the peace that comes from being reconciled with God. St Paul said "Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" Rm 5.1. This latter peace is the peace that Christians have, the peace that is said to go beyond human understanding, the peace you have when you lay your head on your pillow at night (Ps 4.8). As far as the first type of peace is concerned, I believe that Revelations teaches us that peace will never be achieved on earth until the Lord returns (Rev 6.4).

Yeah, the future does look grim, but there's no harm in working towards altrusitic goals and peace instead of just accepting a hopeless future

What do you mean by peace? Contentment is the word. You are content with whatever you have got in this world you are at peace.

Me.
Darn, I wanted to be the first one to answer this.
Oh well.
Here is my thought on your important question:
It must begin with a thought.
I think it.
Someone else does too.
Hopefully it can catch on like the pay it forward idea.
Peace would be nice, wouldn't it.
Plain and simple.
Peace to all.

We will have peace when we are raptured up to heaven and when Christ returns and every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord.

It will never happen. It is a pipe dream and useless to even pine for. As long as human beings walk the earth, there will be war and conflict.
