Actually rap in the beginning was about oppression, poverty, everyday joy, change, circumstance. They felt as a minority the system neglected them which is true to given circumstances. They took pride in that materialism isn't everything and it's ok to be poor. Don't conform to the system and don't let it get you down.

But, as it progressed it became about materialism, conforming, predigest against women, even against races(jews among others), pride in being being better than someone else rich etc..., taking derogatory terms and trying to make them positive which they should of just made new ones instead of showing how much victims they really were by needing that kind of crutch. The music made a full 180 and began to be about what they fought against which is sad.
