Maybe Palm Desert, the Marriott Resort is nice. Stay away from the casino's, lots of sr. citizens not very romantic. Also consider Laguna Beach or Long Beach.

Way to go buddy! An older woman! Palm Springs is not a bad place to go but DON'T go to the casinos; they are full of low lives trying to win a dollar with their only dollar.
There is a tram ride up to the tall mountains across the Cabazon outlet shopping malls (whichis also a good destination for her, but make sure you don't pay for anything, so said Tom Leykis). The name of the place slipped my mind, but the tram ride is very beautiful. At the top, there is a fantastic hiking trail that's just quiet and full of amazing rock formations and plenty of places to some fun stuff to happen between a man and a older woman. BRING SOMETHING WARM!
If you go to Palm Springs, take her to this restaurant called LG Steakhouse. LG is the only steakhouse made it to the list of top 10 steak houses in the entire USA! The food is unbelievable. Try to stay at the La Quinta Resort, rooms are nice and clean and you share the semi-private pool and spa with 3 other groups of people so no big crowds. There are also tennis courts and golf, if you guys know how to do those things.
However, I like to suggest you take her to San Diego since you are from SD, you will know where to take her and SD is a much better place to take her. People from LA think SD is a great place. Go to La Jolla water front, 4th Street, the Downtown water front; c'mon, you know all these places. You can blow her away by going up to LA and picking her up; it's a lot of driving, but she will be impressed with your thoughtfullness. I don't know if you 2 have already been in the sack, but going to SD will signal to her that you are taking her to your turf and she will have to put out.
Another thing you can do is take the train and go to Santa Barbara. You can drive up to LA, meet her and go to the train station and ride up to SB. The train goes by the coast and the sceneries is amazing. Downtown SB is full of shops and small restaurant that serves fantastic food. Hotels should not be expensive at this time of year. However, the only thing is that shre lives in N. LA, she may have been to SB already.
One more place is the City of Laguna Niguel just south of Orange County. Plenty of hotels to stay; if you have the money, try Ritz-Carlton, it's a panty-dropper; if you are on a budget, try the other smaller hotels that are just full of sea-side charaters. The town of Laguna Niguel offers great beach front walks, dotted with reatuants too numerous to count, and art galleries and shops are all very interesting to see. Laguna Niguel would acutally be my first choice since it's a half way point for both of you. Also, the drive up and down the PCH 101 at night is gorgeous. Don't forget to watch the sunset on the beach down by the Ritz. Bring a nice blanket to shield you 2 from the wind.
Palm Springs is ok, but it will be cold if you decide to ride the tram and unless you play golf, there really is not too much to do. SD will be a lot of fun, just walking around La Jolly will be a treat; SD has the added bonus that it's your home town. SB is a quaint with a lot of flavor, the train ride will be a nice touch. Laguana Nigel maybe winner with a combination of a little bit of everything.
Good luck and wear a condom!

What about Catalina Island...the Catalina express leaves from Long Beach. Lots to do over there, and a very romantic place.
