(Continued question) that they were written hundreds of years ago and were based on primitive like times and during a war like stage.

Everytime a new religon was born hundreds of years ago, war raged against it.

Such as what happened to the Jew's and Christians.

When the religon Islam was born war raged against it as it did with other religons that had been founded.

So those Verses in the Quaran based on fighting Non Believers are based on the war that was put against Islam when it was founded.

Yet deranged idiotic lunatics misinterpreted the verse(s) and with it they created the 9/11 tradgedy and brought a new founded racism towards Islam.

Even if there are violent verses in the Quaran, there are only quite a few and they're based on the war that was set ages ago.

I, for one, don't believe in hurting anyone, including Non Muslims (ect.). (Im a Muslim)

And what more, the rest of the Quaran is peaceful and yet everyone seems to ignore that -

I think you are onto something, and perhaps the solution to the problem.

The Bible has a lot of violent passages too, but as both Christianity and Judaism matured (and this has taken a long time, and there is room to go yet), it became apparent that the interpretation of scripture is more important than the raw words.

It is difficult to think, for instance, of God literally wanting Joshua to slay all the Canaanites and not leave survivors. So it becomes important to understand the meaning of the text (but I won't sidetrack into an explanation of the Book of Joshua.)

So that's something that I think has to become more prevalent in Islam - an understanding that the Qu'ran must be appreciated in its 6th century context. A more civilized structure exists in the world today than that faced by the Quraish in the 6th and 7th centuries - there are ways of resolving disputes without war, such as arbitration, diplomacy, and the United Nations. And when war does erupt, our weapons are more violent and can do more damage. Our obligation to avoid war is much greater now than it was then. Mohammed would surely approve of diplomacy and whatnot in a modern context, and the bloodthirstier passages may not be as important today as they were then... just like with the Bible.

You cant just take out a peice of something and forget the rest?
Really?
Then every christian and catholic are going down!.....dooby doo down down.
Comma comma down dooby doo down down!
That's right, breaking up is hard too do!
But YOU religious folks do it ALL THE TIME.
Uhhhh, we don't include the old testament....uhhhhh, we don't include these books because it is generally understood that these books are only for teaching and not to be taken literally...uhhhh, we don't use those books because we as the learned and just do not feel they should be included with the rest.

In my most humble opinion you have hit upon the very thing that makes sure I will stay an atheist.
No one can agree on a single "interpretation" of ANY religious text!
The very fact that a book that tells you how to live your life so that you will have a good afterlife, as opposed to fire and brimstone, is open to constant and varied opinion and "interpretation", is ridiculous.
There are books of the bible that I know you haven't read.
You know why?
Because they were never included in the bible when it was published and they are still excluded to this day!
In addition, recent research has found many and important translation problem within the bible.
Then there are the dead sea scrolls.
This is stupidity gone insane.
People killing people, because the other people were killing people.
They call this just.
We are told the bible DOESN'T SAY "thou shalt not kill", the bible says "thou shalt not murder".
Two entirely different things.
Take an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, but love thy neighbor, but not too much, because that's a sin, too.

The bible couldn't read any better if the three stooges, laurel and hardy, martin and lewis, and abbott and costello wrote it.

What's the real problem?
That people can't believe in each other, they have to have their invisible people to tell them how to live.
Common sense is no longer common.

I strongy disagree with your interpretation.

If I understand you correctly, you are suggesting that descriptions of Jihad in the Quran relate to Muslim self-preservation or defense from aggressors. However, Islam has a well-documented history of violent conquest and converting new territories conquered by the sword. I'm a strong believer that the spirit of a religion is defined more by the way it is practiced than by the holy texts it is founded on.

As an analogy, Communism is founded upon a great utopian principle of equality, but the practitioners of communism have transformed it into something altogether different.

Because people like to focus on the negative of situations instead of the positive, also the Al Quran like the bible was written on some of the opinions of man. Not everything you read may not be a direct saying from God, mans interpretation can sometimes get in the way. As far as 9-11goes it is not right to stereotype Muslims just because of a few un-righteous ones. Christians have also done alot of damage to the world, including George Bush. One bad person of a certain faith should not account for the whole religion.

Because these are sometimes the same narrow-minded thinkers who piecemeal their own "holy book" out to prove that they have the right to bash anyone. EGO gets in the way every time. You get someone who thinks so highly of themself that their ideas are the only ones that are correct and could only be correct and therefore they think they have a right to judge and nobody should challenge them. If you do challenge them, they haul out the un-Christianlike, lame insults and arguments because THEIR mind is deluded enough to think such things bother those who know better.

Nothing to do with these people really, *shrug*. You're doing what you can. Good effort.

Guess Mohammad didn't see all this coming! Earth is now a social society and no longer a localized community of simlar beliefs and views. Not one person in the world thinks they are wrong especially in thier beleifs. So its got to be the other guy that is wrong. If God is real this is an awfully cruel joke.

A well founded society needs protection and strength to keep going. Islam is the religion for all people and all times. those few verses in the Quran that discuss the issue of war and fighting are valid for all non believers at all times old or modern.

in order to appeale to non muslims, some of us mistakingly think that coming up with stories to lighten the effect of some verses and concepts of islam would work. that's wrong.

every nation has its rules and procedures in times of war. if any enemy tries to threaten that nation's way of life, he or she gets proscuted and in many cases killed. it is the same way in Islam.

you have to understand that islam is for all people regardless. it is also valid for all times. don't fall into that trap. those verses in the quran do not want muslims to go in the streets killing the non believers, that would be nonsense . islam fights those who kill and fight muslims only.

Why not just say it is good in parts and was quite an acheivement for 1500 years ago but we have moved on since.

People today choose which parts of their "Holy" book they will respond to, and it's too often the violent and hateful parts. Such "Holy" books are an anchor keeping peopel mired in the past, keeping them from evolving into a better moral sensibility. I say, BURN all "Holy" Books!
