This question is open but I'd like to hear from mature guys who date fairly regularly.
I met a nice guy online and we're set to go on our first date.
Convention puts all the onerous on guys to do everything, pay, bring flowers or some other gift, open doors, etc. etc. While I'm old-fashioned, I'd also like to show to a guy that I appreciate his efforts and would like to bring my date a nice little gift, especially since I know he'll probably pick up the tab (even if I offer).
What would be a nice, small gift just to break the ice and develop a nice rapport for the evening (and possibly for the relationship on the whole)? Thanks.

The best gift I think you can give him is yourself - and by that I mean, be yourself, smile a lot and get to know him. Be honest with him. I do not think a gift is appropriate for a first date. Just getting to know each other as friends is a great gift.

No, I honestly don't think a gift on a first date is necessary and if anything, it might be a little akward. Yes, he should pay for dinner and it is sweet if he gives you flowers, but in a way that is almost expected. Wait until you meet him in person and see what he is like, because once you physically meet him, maybe you wouldn't want to give him a gift! Don't be quick to do a lot for a guy whom you really don't even know that well, even if you think you do because knowing someone from the internet, he could very easily put up a front. Meet him first and give it time before you decide to shower him with gifts.

I would say that it is time to move into the 21st Century. Never mind a gift, offer to pay for the meal.
My wife is very into old fashion standards and I cannot say that I neglect opening doors for her or paying for meals, but I also enjoyed her buying me a few dinners and taking me on a number of dates.
Those old standards only worked when women did not work, but today is a different world.

Guys won't expect to have you give something on the first date. Of course guys always give but women, ek, not really. So you don't need to worry about it. You can wait till you guys really like each other then you will go for it to give him something.

You shouldn't feel obligated to give him a gift. However, if you feel that this is something you want to do, why not make it personal...like a music Cd of your favorite songs or a copy of one of your favorite books or a copy of your favorite poem, etc....

bake something for him
cookies, brownies, fudge, etc.
guys love food and it won't break the bank for you.
plus it doesn't put too much pressure on the date. it's a small gesture that comes from your heart.
