The truth is chocolate contains theobromine that is toxic to dogs in sufficient quantities. This is a xanthine compound in the same family of caffeine, and theophylline.

The good news is that it takes, on average, a fairly large amount of theobromine 100-150 mg/kg to cause a toxic reaction. Although there are variables to consider like the individual sensitivity, animal size and chocolate concentration.

On average,
Milk chocolate contains 44 mg of theobromine per oz.
Semisweet chocolate contains 150mg/oz.
Baker's chocolate 390mg/oz.

Using a dose of 100 mg/kg as the toxic dose it comes out roughly as:
1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate
1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for Semisweet chocolate
1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight for Baker's chocolate.

So, for example, 2 oz. of Baker's chocolate can cause great risk to an 15 lb. dog. Yet, 2 oz. of Milk chocolate usually will only cause digestive problems.

white chocolate is almost fine for dogs, dark chocolate, in certain doses, can kill them. depending on the dog, the chocolate, and the amount, will determine how much it can hurt it. it raises their heart rate and blood pressure, and can give them a heart attack. if it's a small dog, and it gets a hold of a half a dark chocolate bar, then chances are, it will hurt it, take i to the vet.

if it was a milk chocolate bar, and it's a medium sized dog, and it only got a little, then it will probably be fine. if you're concerned, then call your vet and see if they think it should have it's stomach pumped.

good luck!!

it depends on the size of the dog and how much it ate
generally 1 ounce is enough to kill a 15 pound dog, 2 for a 30, etc

Make sure you don't drop chocolate on the floor, or leave any where your dog can get at it. Chocolate can be hazardous and even deadly to a dog. ^^

take care of your dog.. ^^

if it's just a bit, don't worry, he'll be fine!
sugar and chocolate can harm dogs if they eat it frecuently along their lifes,....or if they have tons of it in the same day, but don't worry for a bit.

our miniature dachshund ate a 1lb hershey candy bar and suffered no ill effects.
unless its bakers chocolate, you have no worries.
if it was, you should take the dog in if you know how much it consumed and it was more than just a tiny bit.
