if you'd rather avoid it, don't enlist. If you haven't bothered to check, there's a pretty huge war going on...

Wow such negativity! I know many people that have joined the military for the education.... what people don't understand is you are paying for part of it and if you get out even under an honorable discharge before two years of service you loose what you paid into the GI Bill (I know a few this has happened to, injured while serving and days shy of the 2 year mark, and they get not a cent towards college). I personally would not recommend you going into the military if its for an education at this time since we are at war. If you have not heard they are even taking people from the Navy giving them 2 weeks training and sending them to fight next to the Army and Marines, so there really is no safe military group. What you might want to look into is either AmeriCorp or JobCor they offer a lot and don't ask for much in return and it helps. I have family member doing the Job Cor thing and a friend in Ameri Cor. Explore all avenues before you decide what is best for you. Best wishes!

Have a GREAT day!

if you go Active duty.. your chances are about 100%. If you go Reserves or Guard.. they drop down ..to about 85%.

do NOT join to get an education, or thinking you will not deploy. because you will. even if you don't go to Iraq or Afghanistan, we still need bodies in Somalia and elsewhere.

Have you been under a rock the last 6 years? have you not read the paper or watched the news? where on earth did you ever get the impression that you could avoid deployment in this day and age?!

Big Dave, once you cross the tracks into BT your @$$ belongs to the government! They can tell you where to go, when to go there and by which means you're going. Also, with Bush's new initiative to deploy an additional 20K troops to Iraq, I'd bet on being shipped out as soon as AIT is over, if they don't reclass you as an 11-bravo as soon as BT is over, which means that you won't be doing your original MOS, you'll be learning more about Infantry!

But, hey...it's your life, do what you want. Personally, I'd look into scholarships & loans for persuing further education, if you aren't looking to get a government job after college, and the military experience might be a feather in your cap.

Join the Army and you will get an education in survival! Yes...it is most highly you would be called out. The U.S. just started another war. In Somalia. Like to travel and see the world? Go for it.

You're joining for the wrong reason. Education incentives are payment for performing a noble and dangerous service for your county. There is no free lunch, and you had better plan on being called to active duty. If that thought turns you off, you should start applying for student loans.

Yes they are fairly high. I would advise against joining the military soley for a free education, it is not a strong enough reason for what you are swearing an oath to do. Re-research this choice and fing some more better reasons to join.

If you want to avoid going to war it would be best to not join the armed services. If you want a free education study hard in school and get a scholarship.

Um go to college to get an education. There's isn't 1 person in the Military right now who hasn't gone to Iraq. If you're a coward then don't join.

Big Dave you are quite the liar. In a previous question you said you were already in the Army and were getting sent to Iraq. You wanted to know how to get out of it.

Is it that fun to come on here and lie to people. You are a disgrace. If you are in that much need of attention go back to Mommy and Daddy.

If you don't want to be called up for duty, joining the army is probably the worst way to accomplish this.
