While I don't believe in the Christian God, you answered your own question during the asking. It's people's free will that let's them believe in God, or whatever else they want to believe in.

By the definition of freethinking in your link, no "freethinker" could ever truly be an atheist either.
"Freethought holds that individuals should neither accept nor reject ideas proposed as truth without recourse to knowledge and reason."
Some people hold the idea of God as truth. Therefore a freethinker cannot accept or reject this idea without factual knowledge against it. This would involve prooving the absence of God which we know is impossible. Also, there is no scientific evidence for life occuring from non-living matter. Between these two ideas, a freethinker can have no real opinion on lifes origin.

Scientific laws do not CAUSE something to happen, they simply DESCRIBE what does happen.
A story:
The law of gravity was stated for the very first time in the year 1665 by the great english scientist, Sir Isaac Newton. It is said that one day...Newton saw an apple fall from a tree in his garden. After watching the apple fall, Newton began to think about the direction to which the apple had fallen. Newton kept on watching the tree. Another apple fell, then another, and another. As Newton watched each of the apples fall he thought about what he was watching and asked himself a very simple question: "why don't the apples fall some other direction beside down?" As a result of this Newton stated the "LAW" of Gavity which explains why an apples, or any other object always falls toward the center of the earth. The weight of the earth attracts the weight of the apple. Having come to this conclusion, Newton was then able to explain a great deal about the movement of the sun, the moon, and the planets.
The End
The "Law" of Gavity does not cause apples to fall. Instead, it DESCRIBES the fact that apples and all other object do fall toward the center of the earth.
Some people become confused by the way the word "law is used. It has more than one meaning in English.
For example:
The tax laws of any country say that certain people MUST PAY THEIR TAXES.
In other words, the laws of a country say what must happen
Therefore, when we ise the word "LAW" to talk about scientific statement we are talking about something different.
The laws of a country state what must happen, but the "LAWS" of science only state what REALLY does happen.
In other words, the laws of a country CAUSE things to happen while scientific "LAWS" only DESCRIBE what really does take place.
Scientific LAWS do not CAUSE something to happen in nature, they simply describe what does happen.
Since that is true, there must be some other cause for natural happenings
Matthew 5:45 WHY does the sun rise? Because God makes it rise?
Matthew 5:45 WHY does it rain? Because God makes it rain?
The Bible gives many other example of how God CAUSES the thing in nature to operate the way they do.
I love how you state the question: believe IN him.
i see that you might believe in God too.
I believe God and at his word, putting me in him to trust in him, and trust not just in him but trust him. And if I trust in the Living God, the God of Jacob, then that is my reason.

That's like saying...
OK, I have a briefcase here with a million dollars in it and I'm gonna give you a choice. You can choose this money, or... you can let me punch you in the face. What's it gonna be?
You choose the money.
I'm perplexed and try to get you to explain to me why you chose the money. Afterall, you're a freethinker and you had the choice.

Free thought to me a
is a right to draw my own conclusions
Your just as bad as the over zealous Right.
I have my beliefs, and I'm a free thinker. Don't be what you detest....someone who stereo-types and judges others by what happens to be right for you.

Praise God !! We have free will to believe in God. I believe in God because, God has shown me how much he loves and cares for me. He gave us all life, the world around us(trees, rivers, lakes, mountains, oceans, sky, birds, plants, fruit, animals, insects, snakes, veggies, friends, family, children, and so much more. God has answered many prayers, of which only he and I knew about. God is awesome!
Please read the book of John and Romans.
I have some in my family who do not believe in God. Yes, that is their choice. I choose to pray for them.
May you see with your Heart and not your eyes, dear one/

It's our will to praise and follow God. We know who He is in our life. We have experience the blind seeing, the deaf hearing, the lame walking experience. Because we opened our spirits to receive God and He came right in. The Word says Behold I stand at the door of your heart knocking. Let Him in and He'll sup with you.

Yes, it is your choice to choose to be an atheist.
He wants us to make the choice of our own free will. If anybody is forced to follow, they won’t really believe it in their hearts and that is the only place that matters to God.
