Actually, you are correct in that the dimensions of the ark are still used today. Length/width/height are all virtually optimal for a ship.
Did you ever notice, however, that most drawings of the ark are incorrect? They picture it as boat-shaped with a little house-like object on top. In reality, if you look at the dimensions, it was a large rectangular box with multiple levels. Interesting stuff.

Why are you surprised? The knowledge of how to build barges was common in the world at the time. Boat building is an example of a science that the bible got right.
The 40 days of rain raising sea levels to a height sufficient to cover Mt. Everest is an example of science the bible got wrong. Saying the flood happened during a period where the Egyptians were keeping records which don't mention being covered by miles and miles of water is an example of history that is laughable.

You must bear in mind that the particular study was conducted at the behest of a Creationist Group, and focused narrowly on the "safety" factors of the ark. It would be difficult to build a vessel of sufficient size to carry two of each of the animals on earth. Insects alone outweigh humans in biomass, without considering any of the other sorts of animals.

Near optimal for WHAT?!?!?!?! Floating around on open water, or for transporting two of 30,000 (estimated by the Center for Creation Science) species for a total of 60,000 animals on one small boat for an entire year with 8 humans to feed and clean up after 60K animals, not to mention being unable to provide fresh water for that many animals.....YA RIGHT.

They forgot to include room for the dinosaurs, which makes the dimensions meaningless. If the dimensions were optimal in any sense, that would make Noah a good carpenter, and prove nothing else.

Funny, every computer simulation done by a credible maritime research facility has shown the thing disintegrating within five MINUTES of being afloat.
