You must buy food that has omega's in them. The link below will explain why omega fatty acids are very important in your dogs diet.
Some good foods that have this include Eukanuba, Nutro Natural Choice, and Wellness!
I have a 3 year old Yellow lab and he use to shed a lot, but now that I have him on a better food than he started out on, his shedding is at a minimal.

All animals shed, even us humans. Of course different animals shed differently. Some short haired dogs can shed an amazing amount of hair, especially if they are "double coated" breeds with an undercoat. Some dogs, such as poodles, hardly seem to shed at all when properly groomed. Twice a year or so, most animals go through thier seasonal shedding, and then the problems can get worse for a while. This is also known, among dogs, as "blowing the coat".
All shedding problems can be helped by regular grooming. If you think your animal is shedding excessively, take him or her to the vet. It can be a symptom of some underlying health problem, such as a thyroid imbalance. A vet can diagnose this problem.
Do not change your dog's food because you feel it will help with the shedding. Talk to your vet.
Remember a good brushing, or vacuuming. A balanced diet and a lot of love. You and your dogwill be fine.

I have a yellow Lab that had the same problem. I switched his diet to a high protein holistic diet and added a multi vitamin especially for coats. All his vitamins and supplements come from Azmira (holistic or all natural care for animals). You can visit their website www.azmira.com. to find some good supplements but you want something that has the Omega 3 oil and other fish oils. I also had him on Royal Canin Labrador Retriever 30 which is an excellent food that is especially designed to meet the needs of the Lab. It has a high protein % of 30 and reduced fat. It also has special vitamins for the coat. My dog still gets that food mixed with a completely all natural food called LIfe's Abundance. The Life's Abundance can only be ordered on line because it is made fresh and then shipped. But you can check out Royal Canin's website,www.royalcanin.com. that food helped his coat the best.

Labs shed. A lot. Twice a year they shed even more.
You can REDUCE (but not stop) the shedding by:
1) Feeding a good quality diet,
2) Regular, thorough brushing (slicker brush, Zoom Groom, shedding blade, flea comb, Furminator all all recommended tools for this)
A nice warm bath will help to loosen the old hair and make it easier to remove.

Labs shed alot. Usually excessive shedding is diet related. Make sure you are feeding a high quality kibble.

I've had two labs (looooved them so much) but I don't miss all that fur.
I have found that if you brush daily and provide a high quality diet that their coats are so much more healthy. And a common misconception about High Quality food is that it is more expensive. It isn't, because you don't have to feed them as much. The lesser quality foods have so much "filler" that it takes more.
