I didn't realize that this was a disorder. It happened to me once when I was 21. I took a nap in the middle of the afternoon and "woke up" but could not open my eyes, move any part of me, or speak/move lips. After what seemed an eternity (probably no more than a couple of minutes) I slowly started to move (like when your leg is asleep) and was fine. It never happened again. It was if my mind woke up and became aware before my body woke up. It reminded me of that Twilight Zone episode where that guy isnt dead but everyone thinks he is and at the end he is at his autopsy screaming inside....I can feel it...ahhhh I can feel it.

Yes, I have sleep paralysis episodes regularly. I started having them several years ago along with night terrors. At first, I was confused, because the episodes were not that scary. The more I've had though, the more terrifying they have become. I can't do things that will guarantee that I won't have them, but I find these things help reduce the probability:

Don't sleep on your back
Stick to a regular sleep schedule (I often have them when I've been really tired)
I don't have very scary episodes (where the demon/creatures appear) when my dog sleeps on my bed.

If you do wake up to find yourself paralyzed, it is best to relax and try to slip back into sleep. Otherwise, focus on one thing to try and move, such as your fingers, and eventually you will come out of it.

It is still up in the air whether this is a disorder or not. Check out this site for more info.
