The best comb I've found is the one sold by Nitty Gritty. It is very effective. They also do a natural headlice solution as well.

Just keep combing daily for a week and take a good look at the hair up close and near the scalp. If you have to, slide the eggs off by hand if the comb won't capture them. One egg and it starts all over again.

As a preventative, brush a few drops of tea tree through the hair every day, and use tea tree shampoo and conditioner. Lice don't like strong smells like neem or tea tree.

When i was younger i had verrry long hair and my mum bought a electronic head lice comb from Boots the pharmacy. It made a bit of a buzzing sound and wasn't very comfy but was much more pleasent than chemicals.

She used to thourougly come my hair 3 or 4 times a day, and within a few days they were gone. The comb should come with instructions anyway. Hope that helped :)

If you really are against any chemicals, then the electronic comb, (Robi-Comb-Wal-Mart about (25-$30) powered by a AA battery is effective. However, read the directions carefully-you must do it as directed for it to work with no shortcuts- and plan on about 2 hours per child to rid yourselves of this problem. Any stuffed animals, linens, pillows and things can be washed in very hot water and dryed on high. But without the chemical spray, I don't know what to tell you about your couch, carpets, car seats, etc.

Apparently rubbing vinegar into hair and leaving it for a couple of minutes makes all the lice try to escape out of the hair, you obviously have to make sure to rinse very well. You need to use a nitcomb too to get rid of the eggs. Using a nitcomb with conditioner in their hair also helps remove the lice. It's a long process though, best to try and do it twice a day and it could take a couple of weeks.

You can buy special nit combs for people with long hair (sometimes the school will sell them), the teeth on them are alot longer. Each time they have their hair conditioned, just comb it through, it also conditions your hair beautifully. I guarantee success, i work in a school and and have been lice free since i started using this method not bad for £1.

either cut their hair, or use a nix comb.

Another thing is to wash their hair with hot water (all the way to the roots). you don't need special soaps or anything, just use body wash in their hair. Repeat daily and the lice will go away. Also, tell your girls not to put their heads near the other children and don't put on their hats.

Ummm, I know that you said that you dont want chemicals....but my vet recommended I use Frontline flea treatment!! She used it on her daughter months ago and she has not had them since!

I brought the kitten Frontline and used it on myself first to check that my head did not explode or anything and I can honestly say that my daughter (and then myself) have not had them since! She also has long hair and was getting them all the time, but we have not had the problem since.

Frontline actually says on the box that it is for fleas, mites and biting lice.

head lice is an unfortunate reality for children in public schools.I am the father of three children who has dealt with this problem many times.I understand not wanting to use chemicals, but to rid your children of human insects that is your only defense.Rid makes a product for lice killing, but you must go the extra step.the eggs left on hair strands must be picked out.Their are hair salons that specialize in removal if your time is limited, but you should also familiarize yourself as to what the eggs look like and learn how to slide the eggs off those strands and place into a container of alchohol. You should also chemically treat your furniture and carpets, not to forget your automobiles as your children have most likely ridden in them as well. All bedding should be washed and high heat dried.Any stuffed animals or dolls with hair should be tied in garbage bags for 30 days. It's alot of work for you however when it comes to our children there is nothing we can't do or find time for. Also you should check their heads on a regular basis, look at it as a way of spending some one on one time with them.If they have friends that come over you should take a minut and check their heads before allowing them in.No good parent will take offense to you doing that.they also sell plastic pillow covers that will lessen your work should you have to deal with this again.Stay on your school and its nurse to make sure they are also doing their jobs to stop this costly problem.Good luck with this .I hope it helps.

It's almost impossible to get rid of on girls with long hair.

When parents of ALL children with lice in school treat and treat it properly, then you stand a chance of getting rid of them...otherwise you are just going round and round.

When my boys had them, I just gave them a buzz cut and then used NIX and then the nit comb.

Even before I used the NIX I used the comb and you could just see the critters stuck between the combs. They are prettry gross and when you actually see them, believe me you make every effort to get rid of them. To think those things are feeding off your head is gross.

But you have to get rid of every single nit or in a week they hatch and you have a new batch. It only takes one to get the cycle going again.

And you have to vacuum and wash everything and tie the rest in a plastic bag for two weeks (clothing/teddy bears, etc. you don't wash)

It's almost impossible to get out of long hair though. I had the hardest time with my daughter and they seemed to linger for years...whether she got them over again or just missed nit I don't know but there was a limit to how far I would go using the chemicals.

Some lice are immune to the chemicals too. I remember using them on my daughter and she still had a live one afterwards.

So sometimes it's a losing battle.

When they are out of elementary school and camps and all those places it should be much better and hopefully you get rid of the pests once and for all.

And you are right to treat everyone in the family too...especially with little kids because yes they DO pass them on to mommy too...all those hugs and cuddles are worth it though. :~)

PS: LIVE nits cling to the hair shaft at the scalp. They need the heat from your scalp to hatch...so focus on starting right at the scalp and drag those nits right off, rinse and repeat.

I agree it's best to do with a conditioner which won't make the comb snag as much.

PSS: Some people smother their kids' heads with MAYONNAISE and then put a plastic cap over it. The mayo smothers and chokes off the lice and then afterwards you wash and comb out the nits. I suppose the mayo is very healthy for your hair to so you can do this a few times and see if it works too.

Other people put a few drops of tea tree oil in shampoo and claim it "keeps them away"...I suppose it can't hurt to try everything.

LICE LOVE CLEAN HAIR because they can manouver about easier on clean hair...doesnt mean keep it dirty but it dispels the myth they come because people don't wash their hair....so I do suggest you try the conditioner and mayo and anything that makes it uncormfortable for lice to move around on your SCALP which is where they live and feed off of.
