I would suggest looking into the havanese. They're small dogs with a long, non-shedding coat and a playful, bouncy personality. They learn fast, get along with people and other animals, but they need a lot of grooming (as does a Yorkie) and tend to bark quite a bit.
I might also recommend the border terrier. They're small dogs, they have short, wiry hair that doesn't need much grooming and doesn't shed too much. They have an active, dynamic personality and can be stubborn. They can also get along better with other animals compared to other terriers.
Lastly, perhaps you would be interested in the miniature schnauzer. These are small dogs with a coat that doesn't shed too much but needs regular trimming. Some tend to bark a lot, and they are typically playful and spunky.
These are my three suggestions. All three breeds are small, yet sturdy, not like some of the tiny fragile breeds out there. My three recommendations also either shed little hair or none at all. I hope that helps!

Depends on what you want your dog for - for security, for a companion, a running partner. If you want a dog - get a real dog - not one of those hairy sissy dogs that requires a trip to the doggie salon every other week. I have found the boston terriers and pugs are really good. But if you want a large dog that is very good with kids, smart, loyal, and and excellent security dog - a bullmastiff is the way to go.

You can never go wrong with a Golden Retriever. They need a lot of work for the first year, but for the rest of their lives they are a wonderful, well social, easily adaptable dog. Very intelligent, want total attention and are totally devoted. I would suggest Puppy School for any dog.

I just lost my dog of 15 years, and she was a chihuahua. They are real good house dogs and security is their life.I never had anyone come to my house that she was not barking to let me know. But this breed does not know that they are small and they love to fight other dogs.My vet said that she was antisocial. But never the less, I took her everywhere I went---even to work. It's going to be hard to replace her. They do get joint damage if they jump off the furniture too much.Good Luck.

well believe it or not mine is a fox terrier. She never goes potty in the house and she was house-trained within a week of getting her as a puppy. She only gets really excited the way terriers do when people come in the house but she doesn't jump on them she just starts running around. Then she'll crawl up into your lap and lay down and she's so still and sweet. And she not lazy either if you wanna play she'll play until you stop.

Yorkies are known to be yelpers. Plus, they need CONSTANT attention. And, you can't even take them on walks becuase they are sooo small. I have a malte-poo. He is the cutest thing ever. If you leave enough toys, he is happy. And, he barely even barks or yelps. Malte-poos are the perfect companion. Most are between 5-10 pounds, so they are sturdy but real small. I carry mine in my tote bag! ;)
